Strong Leadership on Jurisdictional Issues Will Open the Way for Offshore Wind

April 10, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) today praised the leadership shown by U.S. Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chair Jon Wellinghoff as the two signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to clarify roles and streamline the permitting process for renewable energy development on the U.S. outer continental shelf.

AWEA CEO Denise Bode said in a statement, "We appreciate the strong leadership of Secretary Salazar and Chairman Wellinghoff. This agreement will help remove some of the bureaucratic obstacles to offshore wind development, which is a key element of our nation’s clean energy future. These two key agencies have taken a critical step that will help open the way for the U.S. to tap its massive offshore wind resources and bring the benefits of clean energy to electricity consumers in and around our coastal cities."
