NWF Applauds Sen. Boxer’s Climate Principles
February 3, 2009 -- WASHINGTON – Larry Schweiger, president and CEO of National Wildlife Federation, the nation’s largest member-supported conservation organization, joined Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chair Barbara Boxer today as she unveiled guiding principles of climate legislation.
“Driven by the facts of a warming planet and an economy in crisis, we in the conservation community are here today to support legislation that will repower America's economy through clean energy,” said Larry Schweiger. “The most important action America must take in 2009 to galvanize investment in clean energy technology is to enact strong global warming legislation that invests in clean energy technologies, cuts pollution, and protects our natural resources.”
A post-election voter poll from Zogby International in November 2008 showed a vast majority of Americans see clean energy as a key to America's economic health. According to the poll, 78 percent of voters agree that investing in clean energy is important to revitalizing America's economy.
“Our policies will no longer be based on denial and delay but instead on sound science that shows a thriving economy and a healthy climate go hand-in-hand,” continued Schweiger. “The National Wildlife Federation will mobilize our full efforts behind a strong cap-and-invest bill that measures up to what science tells us is urgently needed.”
