New Alabama Law Reforms Juvenile Justice System

May 12, 2008 -- MONTGOMERY - Legislation designed to reform Alabama’s juvenile justice system has been signed into law by Alabama Governor Bob Riley. The new law is designed to reduce the number of children in state custody and redirect them toward community-based programs.

Survey Shows Florida Youth Drug Use Down

April 17, 2008 -- TALLAHASSEE – Florida Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp today announced the steady decline in youth drug use since 2000, as he rolled out the results of the 2007 Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey. The Florida Office of Drug Control Policy, state agencies, law enforcement and substance abuse prevention coalitions have partnered to reduce substance abuse across the state.

“Florida’s children are a treasure, one that we must protect,” said Lt. Governor Kottkamp. “Drug use threatens the safety and security of our children. The survey is vital to understanding how to prevent drug use.”

NCAA, NBA to Create Youth Basketball Initiative

Monday, April 7, 2008, SAN ANTONIO -- The NCAA and the NBA have joined forces to launch a wide-ranging initiative aimed at enhancing youth basketball programs in the United States, it was announced today by NCAA President Dr. Myles Brand and NBA Commissioner David Stern during a press conference from the NCAA Final Four in San Antonio, TX.

The yet unnamed initiative is designed to reach and benefit everyone who participates in youth basketball programs, including the more than 23 million American boys and girls who play basketball, their parents and those who teach, officiate and administer youth basketball programs at every level. Mississippi Youth Voter Turnout More Than Triples

Washington, DC - 03/12/2008 - 14 percent of eligible Mississippi citizens under the age of 30 participated in last night’s primary, according to preliminary estimates by CIRCLE (The Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning & Engagement). More than 13,000 young people participated in the Republican primary and 57,000 in the Democratic primary. (See Table 2.) Four Cities Apply to Host the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012

7 March 2008 -- The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced that four cities have been put forward by their respective National Olympic Committees (NOCs) to apply to host the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012. The Candidate Cities, in alphabetical order, are: Harbin (China), Innsbruck (Austria), Kuopio (Finland), and Lillehammer (Norway).

The NOCs had until 6 March 2008, midnight, to notify the IOC that a city within their jurisdiction was interested in applying.    » read more »

18 February 2008 -- The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will reveal on Thursday 21 February whether Moscow or Singapore will host the very first edition of the Youth Olympic Games in 2010.

The announcement will be made by IOC President Jacques Rogge at the Olympic Museum. The event will be webcast live on olympic.org and fed live from Lausanne.

12/11/2007, NEW YORK -- The 2007 Monitoring the Future study (MTF) released today in Washington, D.C., reports promising trends with significant declines in the overall use of illicit drugs among teenagers in the past year, as well as a notable reduction in tobacco use among eighth graders.
