Uganda: World Bank Board approves $300m for Power Sector Development in Uganda

WASHINGTON, April 26, 2007 – The World Bank Board of Directors today approved an International Development Association (IDA) credit* of US$300 million to support a Power Sector Development Operation in Uganda. The credit includes a US$220 million investment loan and US$80 million for policy support. It will also benefit from an additional US$6.5 million co-financing grant from the Swedish International Development Agency. WASHINGTON, April 24, 2007 -- The Executive Board of the World Bank Group (WBG) today discussed the new Joint Assistance Strategy for Tanzania (JAST) which includes planned support to Tanzania from the 35 members of the Tanzania Development Partners Group (DPG) over the FY07/08-FY09/10 period. The JAST includes projected disbursements of over US$2 billion per year to Tanzania from across the DPG, with new lending commitments from the International Development Association (IDA) of US$640 million in 2007.    » read more »

WASHINGTON, April 24, 2007 – The Executive Board of the World Bank Group today approved a credit for US$42 million to support the education improvement project for Zanzibar.

Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Added to the List of Countries Eligible for Assistance Under the HIPC Initiative

The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have deemed the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan eligible for assistance under the enhanced Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative based on a preliminary assessment.

To start benefiting from debt relief at the HIPC decision point, Afghanistan will need to take the following actions:

* continue the satisfactory performance under the program supported by the IMF’s Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility;

World Bank Reaches Agreement With Cote D’Ivoire That Could Reopen The Door To New Lending

ABIDJAN, April 19, 2007 - The World Bank and the Government of Côte d'Ivoire have reached an agreement that would facilitate a resumption of Bank credit- and grant-giving to Côte d'Ivoire.
