Venus Williams Wins Wimbledon Tennis

08 July 2007 -- American tennis player Venus Williams has won her fourth women's title at Wimbledon by scoring a straight-sets victory over Marion Bartoli of France.

Williams, seeded 23rd at this event, beat the French player easily, 6-4, 6-1. It took only 90 minutes for the American to win the title for the fourth time.

This was the first time the two players have met on the WTA Tour. Bartoli had upset top seed and world number one Justine Henin of Belgium in the semifinals.    » read more »

Tennis: Federer Captures 5th Consecutive Wimbledon Title

08 July 2007 -- Roger Federer of Switzerland has captured his fifth consecutive Wimbledon tennis title by defeating nemesis Rafael Nadal of Spain in a five-set epic.

Federer appeared to be in trouble in the fifth set Sunday before turning the tables and holding on for a 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 victory.

With the win, Federer becomes the first man to win five straight titles at the All England Tennis Club since Sweden's Bjorn Borg did it between 1976 and 1980.    » read more »

29 June 2007 -- More rain has fallen on the fifth day of the Wimbledon tennis championships in London, but women's top seed Justine Henin of Belgium overcame her interrupted match to become the first player to reach the fourth round.

The French Open champion had little difficulty in her 6-1, 6-3 victory over Elena Vesnina of Russia. The match was suspended for more than one hour by rain with Henin leading 3-2 in the second set. She broke Vesnina's serve when play resumed then served out for the win.    » read more »

28 June 2007 -- World number one men's tennis player Roger Federer of Switzerland and Marat Safin of Russia have advanced to the third round of the Wimbledon tennis championships in London.

Federer won his 50th straight match on grass when he earned a rain-delayed three-set victory over Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro 6-2, 7-6, 6-1. Federer was leading the match two sets to none when play was suspended Wednesday because of rain.

In the third round, Federer takes on Safin, a straight-sets winner over Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan (6-4, 6-2, 7-6).    » read more »

26 June 2007 -- French Open tennis champion Rafael Nadal of Spain and fourth seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia have advanced to the second round of the Wimbledon championships in London.

The second-seeded Nadal scored a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 win over American Mardy Fish, while Djokovic dismissed Potito Starace of Italy, 6-0, 6-3, 6-4.

The top-seeded Federer faced little opposition after skies cleared Monday, dominating Russia's Teimuraz Gabashvili, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. 20 June 2007 -- Roger Federer of Switzerland and Spain's Rafael Nadal have been named the top two men's seeds at the Wimbledon tennis Championships, which get under way Monday in London.

Federer will be trying for his fifth straight title on the grass courts of the All England Club, after he beat Nadal in last year's final. But Nadal, who has dominated Federer on clay, is expected to give Federer a bigger challenge this year. The Spaniard is trying to become the first player since Sweden's Bjorn Borg in 1980 to follow up a French Open victory with a win at Wimbledon.    » read more »
