Indiana State ends contract with IBM for welfare services
INDIANAPOLIS -- October 15, 2009 -- Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels said today the state has terminated its contract with IBM for the delivery of welfare services. The contract was canceled because the company did not make satisfactory progress to improve services to welfare applicants and recipients under a plan to correct deficiencies.
In its place, the Family and Social Services Administration will go to a hybrid system that will incorporate successful elements of the old welfare delivery system and what is known as the modernized system. The hybrid system will include more face-to-face contact and more localized team-based case management. » read more »
Rep. DeLauro on Indiana’s Decision to Terminate Welfare Benefits Privatization Experiment

Michigan Governor Granholm Allocates More Than $6.8 Million in No Worker Left Behind Funds for Job Training of Welfare Recipient

September 27, 2007 -- (MONTGOMERY) — Alabama Attorney General Troy King today announced a second arrest in a case involving welfare fraud at a Birmingham grocery store. Faramarz Mohammadi-pour, 48, of Hoover, was arrested on September 21. Mohammadi-pour, also known as Faramarz Mohammadipour, is an employee of Family Supermarket at 513 23rd Street North in Birmingham. The store's owner—Abolghassem Mohammadipour, also known as Abolghassem Mohammadi Pour, 59, also of Hoover—was arrested on July 24 on related charges. » read more »

Alabama AG King Announces 10-Year Prison Sentence For Welfare Fraud In Morgan County
August 27, 2007 -- MONTGOMERY — Alabama Attorney General Troy King announced that a Somerville man was sentenced today to serve 10 years in prison for welfare fraud. James Shea, 58, pleaded guilty in Morgan County Circuit Court on August 23 to committing second-degree theft of food stamp benefits, by misprepresenting his household income and resources. Because of previous felony convictions for crimes related to distribution of drugs, he was sentenced today as an habitual offender to serve the 10 year sentence in prison without a period of probation, and ordered to pay restitution. » read more »

Alabama A.G. King Announces 25-Count Felony Conviction In Coffee County Welfare Fraud Case
May 16, 2007 -- (MONTGOMERY) — Alabama Attorney General Troy King today announced the conviction of a Coffee County woman for 25 felony counts involving theft of $11,611 in welfare benefits and possession of forged documents, including a forgery of the probate judge's signature. Judy Calhoun Thomas, also known as Judie A. Thomas, of Elba, pleaded guilty on May 14 in Coffee County Circuit Court. She was sentenced to 32 months of imprisonment, which was suspended, and ordered to serve three years on probation and to pay full restitution to the State of Alabama. » read more »
