Amnesty: UN General Assembly must end war crimes whitewash
3 November 2009 -- On the eve of a United Nations General Assembly debate, Amnesty International has called on UN ambassadors in New York to grasp a unique opportunity to address accountability for war crimes in Gaza and southern Israel earlier in the year.
The General Assembly will convene on Wednesday to debate the comprehensive and authoritative report of the Fact Finding Mission led by Judge Richard Goldstone. The report found that the Israeli and Palestinian sides committed serious violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, including war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity.
Amnesty International sent an open letter to all permanent representatives to the General Assembly and another to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. » read more »

ICC: Bashir Warrant a Major Step Toward Justice for Victims in Darfur
March 4, 2009 -- (The Hague) - Today's decision by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for Sudanese president General Omar al-Bashir is a major step toward combating impunity associated with the horrific crimes in Darfur, said a coalition of 46 organizations from the Justice for Darfur campaign. President al-Bashir is wanted by the court for crimes against humanity and war crimes.
Justice for Darfur called on the international community to press Sudanese authorities to comply with their obligations to execute the warrant. The government of Sudan has failed to bring to justice any of those responsible for crimes under international law in Darfur, and has so far refused to cooperate with the ICC and to surrender any of the suspects. » read more »
ICC issues arrest warrant for Sudanese President al Bashir
4 March 2009 -- The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al Bashir. The warrant details charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes, committed during the conflict in Darfur.
The arrest warrant is an unprecedented move in the history of a conflict that, since it started in 2003, has seen more than 300,000 killed, thousands raped, and millions forcibly displaced.
The decision, reached by the Pre-Trial Chamber of the ICC, was announced during a press conference held at the Court's seat in The Hague on Wednesday.
President al Bashir has been urged to surrender himself immediately to face trial. » read more »

Polish Military Judge Orders Seven Soldiers Held in Afghan Deaths
15 November 2007 -- A military court in Poland has ordered seven Polish soldiers held for three months while officials investigate charges of war crimes in the killing of Afghan civilians.
The soldiers were charged earlier this week with killing civilians while serving with a NATO-led mission in August in the eastern Afghan province of Paktika.
The seven are accused of firing mortar and machine guns into an Afghan village, despite evidence they faced no immediate threat. Six civilians were killed in the ensuing clashes. » read more »

06 September 2007 -- The U.S. military says it has censured three Marine officers for failing to properly investigate the 2005 killings of 24 Iraqi civilians in the town of Haditha.

Serbia: Serbian War Crimes Suspect Arrested in Montenegro
17 June 2007 -- A fugitive Serb general indicted for crimes against humanity in Kosovo in the 1990s has been arrested and is on his way to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
Authorities say Vlastimir Djordjevic - Serbia's assistant interior minister and a close aide to former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic - was arrested Sunday by Montenegro police. A spokesman for the tribunal for the former Yugoslavia said the arrest came with Serbia's help. » read more »
