“Real ID is intended to make us all safer, which I think we can all agree is a laudable goal. However, I strongly believe Real ID’s proposed haphazard implementation and onerous provisions would have the exact opposite effect. New Census Data Confirm Increase in Youth Voter Turnout in 2006 Midterm Elections

Turkey: Turkish President Calls for Referendum on Popular Vote

15 June 2007 -- Turkey's president has called for a referendum on whether the next president should be elected by the people instead of by Parliament.

Ahmet Necdet Sezer called for the referendum after parliament voted for a second time to change the constitution to allow popular election of the president.

Mr. Sezer, who already vetoed the measure once, had to either approve it or call the referendum.

Turkey's ruling Islamist-rooted AK Party proposed the reform package after parliament failed to elect its candidate for president, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul.    » read more »

Florida Governor Crist Signs Legislation Creating Paper Trail For Florida Votes

May 21, 2007 -- WEST PALM BEACH – Florida Governor Charlie Crist today signed House Bill 537 that will establish a paper trail for all votes cast in Florida elections. The election-reform legislation will provide optical scan machines for counties that do not already have them for Election Day voting and early voting sites. New Jersey Attorney General Announces Agreement to Test Voter-verified Paper Record Systems

May 18, 2007 -- Trenton – The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has retained the New Jersey Institute of Technology to test samples of proposed voter-verified paper record systems to be used for electronic voting machines in New Jersey. New Hampshire Governor Lynch Signs Law Eliminating Straight Ticket Voting

May 4, 2007 -- CONCORD - New Hampshire Governor John Lynch today ceremonially signed a law eliminating straight ticket voting from New Hampshire's ballots.

"One of the most important things we can do as citizens is exercise our right to vote," Gov. Lynch said. "We want every vote to count, however with the confusion caused by straight ticket voting, that is not always the case."

The legislation, Senate Bill 36, received strong bipartisan support in the Senate and the House.    » read more »

Arizona Sec. of State Releases Latest Statewide Voter Registration Figures

May 2, 2007 -- PHOENIX -- Arizona Secretary of State Jan Brewer has released the voter registration figures for the State of Arizona for the second quarter of 2007. The statewide voter registration total has increased to 2,609,585 up 15,188 since the first quarter.

There are 1,019,220 registered Republicans, a decrease of 202, since January. Registered Democrats total 858,988, a decrease of 750 and registered Libertarians number 18,612, a decrease of 148 registered voters during that same period.    » read more »

April 23, 2007 -- WASHINGTON - The Justice Department today announced that on April 24, 2007, it will monitor the special election in Osceola County, Fla., to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act.
