Ohio Governor’s Statement on School Shooting

10.10.07 - Columbus, Ohio – Ohio Governor Ted Strickland today released the following statement:

“I am deeply saddened and troubled by the tragic shooting at SuccessTech Academy in Cleveland today. Frances and I grieve for the families, students, teachers and administrators affected by this horrible incident. Our prayers and thoughts go out to them and to the great City of Cleveland during this difficult time. The State of Ohio stands ready to assist in any way possible in the coming days and weeks.”

Connecticut Governor Rell Announces 17 Urban Youth Violence Prevention Grants

October 2, 2007 -- Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced $1.5 million in grants for programs that seek to reduce urban youth violence in Connecticut.

“From Bridgeport and Norwalk to New Haven and New London, these grants will help thousands of young people across Connecticut,” Governor Rell said. “The funds will be a big boost to after school programs, recreational activities and educational offerings in our cities.    » read more »

Jodi Rell today announced that she is directing the Board of Pardons and Paroles to immediately suspend approval of future parole for any inmate serving a sentence involving a violent offense. Connecticut Governor Rell: $1.5 Million Available in Urban Youth Violence Prevention Grants

August 15, 2007 -- Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell today said that grants are now available for programs that seek to reduce urban youth violence in Connecticut. Grant applications are due September 12 and awards will be announced during the week of September 24.

“We expect that 15 to 30 projects will be funded in the range of $50,000 to $100,000 each,” Governor Rell said. “We want to get the word out to all of our cities and nonprofits that this is a great opportunity to gain extra funding for programs that reach out to young people between the ages of 12 and 18.    » read more »

Iraq: At Least 175 Killed by Suicide Truck Bomber in Northern Iraq

14 August 2007 -- The Iraqi army says at least 175 people have been killed and another 200 wounded in a series of suicide truck bombings targeting the minority Yazidi religious sect in northwestern Iraq.

The four bombings took place Tuesday near Kahtaniya, about 120 kilometers west of the city of Mosul.

Yazidis are members of an ancient, primarily Kurdish, religious sect.

In Washington, the White House condemned the bombings as "barbaric attacks on innocent civilians."

Iraq: Iraqi Provincial Governor, Police Chief Killed in Roadside Bomb Attack

11 August 2007 -- Officials say a roadside bomb has killed the governor and police chief of Iraq's southern Diwaniyah province.

The bomb Saturday struck a convoy carrying Governor Khalil Jalil Hamza and police chief Khalid Hassan, killing the two men and at least two members of their security staff.

Police say the attack occurred as the men were returning to the provincial capital of Diwaniyah from a funeral service for a tribal sheik.    » read more »
