Dangerous Worksites Lack Proper Enforcement, Reports AFL-CIO Death on the Job Study
New Data Available in Report Released Today to Mark Workers Memorial Day
April 27, 2009 -- The nation’s workplace safety laws and penalties are too weak to effectively protect workers, according to the new AFL-CIO annual report released today: Death on the Job: The Toll of Neglect.
There were a total of 5,657 fatal workplace injuries in 2007, a slight decrease from the year before, according to the AFL-CIO’s analysis of the newly available data. In 2007, employers reported more than 4 million workers having a work-related injury or illness, more than 10,950 each day. Due to the impact of underreporting of injuries and illness, the true toll may be as high as 12 million workers experiencing an injury or illness in 2007. » read more »

CT Governor Rell: Far-Reaching Labor Agreement Will Cut Costs for Taxpayers Now and in Future

April 21, 2009 -- Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that the tentative agreement between her Administration and state employee labor unions makes significant changes in employee benefits that will result in cost savings to taxpayers now and in years to come. In addition, union leaders have made tentative agreements on their individual labor contracts that include wage freezes and furlough days for all state employees. The combined changes will save more than $637 million in the next two budget years, while a furlough day and the deferral of certain pension payments included in the agreement will also allow the state to achieve some savings in the current fiscal year. » read more »

USW Joins Sierra Club filing on leak risk of under-standard thin-wall pipe
Pittsburgh (Apr. 9) – The United Steelworkers (USW) announced it has challenged the pending federal permit in the controversial $5.4 billion TransCanada Keystone Pipeline that’s using under-standard thin-wall pipe for transport of crude oil from Alberta, Canada to Houston, Texas.
USW International Vice President Tom Conway transmitted a formal complaint to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) on Apr. 6, urging the special permit requested by TransCanada be denied. He said the 2,000 mile pipeline is planned using a 36-inch thin-wall pipe at higher maximum operation pressure than is safely permitted under existing regulations.
