FHA Settles $756 Million Deal to Construct State of the Art Hospital in New Jersey
Capital Health Project is the largest in History of HUD’s FHA
WASHINGTON, DC, April 8, 2009 -- In the largest single transaction of its 75 year history, the Federal Housing Administration today announced that it has finalized a deal to insure a $756 million mortgage for Capital Health of Trenton, New Jersey. The loan is made possible through the FHA's Section 242 Hospital Mortgage Insurance Program. It will allow Capital Health to construct a new 223-bed hospital in Hopewell Township to replace the existing Mercer Medical Center. » read more »
U.S. Census Bureau to Survey Nation's Spending Habits
ATLANTA, GA, TUESDAY, MARCH 31, 2009 -- In April 2009, U.S. Census Bureau field representatives will collect information about how much Americans spend for groceries, clothing, transportation, housing, health care and other items from a sample of households across the country.
The Consumer Expenditure Survey (CE) program consists of two parts:
* The Interview Survey — Throughout the year, about 28,000 households will be interviewed once every three months over five calendar quarters to obtain data on relatively large expenditures and also for those expenditures that occur on a regular basis (such as rent and utilities). » read more »
U.S. Treasury Department Announces Extension of Temporary Guarantee Program for Money Market Funds
Washington, DC, March 31, 2009 -- The U.S. Treasury Department today announced an extension of its temporary Money Market Funds Guarantee Program through September 18, 2009, in order to support ongoing stability in financial markets. The Program was scheduled to end on April 30, 2009.
As a result of this extension, the temporary guarantee program will continue to provide coverage to shareholders up to the amount held in participating money market funds as of the close of business on September 19, 2008. All money market funds that currently participate in the Program and meet the extension requirements under the Guarantee Agreements are eligible to continue to participate in the Program. Funds that are not currently participating in the Program are not eligible to participate. » read more »
IRS Announces Special Tax Break Available for New Car Purchases in 2009
WASHINGTON, March 30, 2009 — The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced today that taxpayers who buy a new passenger vehicle this year may be entitled to deduct state and local sales and excise taxes paid on the purchase on their 2009 tax returns next year.
“For those thinking about buying a new car this year, this deduction may give them a little more drive to make their purchase this year,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “This deduction enables taxpayers to buy now and get cash back later on their tax returns.”
The deduction is limited to the state and local sales and excise taxes paid on up to $49,500 of the purchase price of a qualified new car, light truck, motor home or motorcycle. » read more »
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood Signs a Cooperative Agreement with China on Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods
WASHINGTON, DC, Monday, March 30, 2009 – U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood joined China’s Minister of Transport Li Shenglin today in a historical signing of an agreement to cooperate on the safe transportation of hazardous materials.
Signing the agreement, Secretary LaHood said that both nations’ industries – including manufacturing, agriculture, and medical research – need regular access to certain types of dangerous materials to conduct business.
“Chinese businesses ship billions of dollars worth of trade goods around the world each year, including to the United States,” said Secretary LaHood. “We are eager to work together to make sure these items are transported safely. March 30, 2009 -- Today, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar praised President Barack Obama’s signing of the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act of 2009 into law at the White House. The measure put into law the 26-million acre National Landscape Conservation System within the Bureau of Land Management and adds 2 million acres of new wilderness across the country. It will also preserve 1,000 new miles of wild and scenic rivers.

7/22/08 -- With the president's July 21 signature of the Maritime Pollution Protection Act of 2008, U.S. agencies are setting course to implement a key international agreement to reduce air pollution from large ships. This key step clears the way for U.S. ratification of the international treaty regulating emissions – known as MARPOL Annex VI -- from large diesel-powered, ocean-going vessels. Under MARPOL Annex VI, container ships, tankers, cruise ships and bulk carriers must limit NOx emissions from their category three diesel engines. July 17, 2008 -- The proportion of U.S. adults who self report they are obese increased nearly 2 percent between 2005 and 2007, according to a report in today′s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). An estimated 25.6 percent of U.S. adults reported being obese in 2007 compared to 23.9 percent in 2005, an increase of 1.7 percent.
