US to Send Disaster Aid to Philippines After Devastating Typhoon

24 June 2008 -- U.S. President George Bush says the United States will do it all it can to help the victims of the typhoon that struck the Philippines over the weekend. Following talks at the White House with Philippine President Gloria Arroyo, Mr. Bush announced plans to send a U.S. aircraft carrier to the scene.

President Bush says the USS Ronald Reagan and other naval assets are moving into place.

"We are happy to do it. We want to help our friends in the time of need," the president said.

With President Arroyo at his side, Mr. Bush also expressed America's condolences to the victims of the storm and their families.    » read more »

Typhoon Wipha Forces Postponement of FIFA Women's World Cup Matches

19 September 2007 -- A powerful typhoon has brought wind and rain to eastern China and has forced changes in the schedule at the 16-nation Women's World Cup football (soccer) tournament. VOA's Jim Stevenson is in Shanghai where the heavily favored U.S. women had to wait an extra day before they could travel.

Typhoon Wipha spoiled plans to complete the first round of play at the Women's World Cup. One game has been moved from Shanghai to Hangzhou, and all four of the remaining Group C and Group D games will now be played on Thursday.    » read more »

Typhoon Wipha Slams Into China's Eastern Coast

19 September 2007 -- Typhoon Wipha slammed into China's eastern coast Wednesday near the country's financial hub of Shanghai, after nearly two million people were evacuated from coastal areas.

Wipha made landfall in Zhejiang province, south of Shanghai, in the early morning with winds of 160 kilometers per hour.

The Shanghai Daily reports one person was killed in the city during the storm after he stepped in water touched by an electrical wire.    » read more »

Typhoon Moves Towards Taiwan, China

18 September 2007 -- Meteorologists in East Asia are warning residents in Taiwan and eastern China to brace for Typhoon Wipha, after a separate storm passed through South Korea, killing at least 14.

Forecasters say Wipha is strengthening with winds over 200 kilometers per hour and could bring heavy rains Tuesday.

Another storm, Typhoon Nari, hit South Korea Sunday, displacing nearly 1,000 people, mostly on the resort island of Jeju and in Jeolla Province.    » read more »
