DHS Secretary Napolitano Announces New Directives on Border Searches of Electronic Media

August 27, 2009 -- Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano today announced new directives to enhance and clarify oversight for searches of computers and other electronic media at U.S. ports of entry—a critical step designed to bolster the Department’s efforts to combat transnational crime and terrorism while protecting privacy and civil liberties.

DOT: Airline On-Time Performance Climbs in April

June 9, 2009 -- The nation’s largest airlines had a rate of on-time flights this past April that was higher than both the same month last year and the mark posted in March 2009, according to the Air Travel Consumer Report released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

According to information filed with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), a part of DOT’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA), the 19 carriers reporting on-time performance recorded an overall on-time arrival rate of 79.1 percent in April, better than both the 77.7 percent on-time rate of April 2008 and March 2009’s 78.4 percent.    » read more »

Senator Jeff Bingaman on Roswell Airport

June 9, 2009 -- WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman today announced that the Roswell International Airport will receive $540,000 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

Funding will be used to rehabilitate taxiways C and H.

“Roswell’s new service to Dallas continues to be a success," Bingaman said. “This funding will help the airport make the needed improvement to help ensure continued service.”

Last month, American Eagle announced that it will add four nonstop flights per week from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Roswell International Air Center. The new service is scheduled to begin in August 2009.

Delta Air Lines May Traffic Down 9.7% Year to Year

ATLANTA, June 4 -- Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) today reported traffic results for May 2009. System traffic in May 2009, including both Delta and Northwest operations, decreased 9.7 percent compared to May 2008 on a 7.9 percent decrease in capacity, and load factor declined 1.6 points to 82.3 percent.

Domestic traffic decreased 6.5 percent year over year on a 6.0 percent decrease in capacity. Domestic load factor declined 0.4 points to 84.1 percent. International traffic decreased 14.6 percent year over year on a 10.7 percent decrease in capacity, and load factor declined 3.7 points to 79.4 percent.

American Airlines and Transport Workers Union Announce FAA Renewal of Mechanics Aviation Safety Action Program

Program Includes 'Just Culture' Provisions to Enhance Analysis of Root Causes of Events and Possible Mishaps Rather than Only Reported Incidents

FORT WORTH, Texas, June 4 -- American Airlines, in conjunction with the Transport Workers Union of America (TWU), today announced the renewal by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), of the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) for American's mechanics.

American and TWU have had a program in place for 11 years and with the FAA approved renewal of the program, ASAP will be extended for two more years. The TWU/American Airlines ASAP maintenance program is the longest running in U.S. commercial aviation.    » read more »

American Airlines Expands Mobile Boarding Passes to Three Additional Airports

For Use With Mobile Phones or PDAs; New Airports Include Las Vegas, Atlanta and Minneapolis-St. Paul

FORT WORTH, Texas, June 4 -- American Airlines customers departing from Las Vegas McCarran International (LAS), Jackson Atlanta International (ATL) and Minneapolis-St. Paul International (MSP) can now choose to receive boarding passes electronically on their mobile phones or PDAs - saving the time it takes to print out and present a paper boarding pass at the airport.

As of today passengers departing on domestic flights from these three new airports can choose to use mobile boarding passes, including flights that connect through any of the participating airports.    » read more »

American Airlines Reports 79.2% May Load Factor

FORT WORTH, Texas, June 3, 2009 -- American Airlines reported a May load factor of 79.2 percent, a decrease of 2.6 points versus the same period last year.

Traffic decreased 11.7 percent and capacity decreased 8.8 percent year over year.

Domestic traffic decreased 13.3 percent year over year on 12.4 percent less capacity.

International traffic decreased by 8.9 percent relative to last year on a capacity decrease of 2.7 percent.

American boarded 7.2 million passengers in May.

American Eagle Airlines Reports 73.3% May Load Factor

FORT WORTH, Texas, June 3, 2009 -- American Eagle reported a May load factor of 73.3 percent - an increase of 0.2 points compared to the same period last year.

Traffic decreased 14.3 percent year over year as capacity decreased 14.5 percent.

American Eagle boarded nearly 1.5 million passengers in May.

US Airways Group, Inc. Reports Record 82.8% May Load Factor

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Jun. 3, 2009-- US Airways Group, Inc. (NYSE:LCC) today reported May and year-to-date 2009 traffic results. Mainline revenue passenger miles (RPMs) for the month were 5.1 billion, down 5.2 percent versus May 2008. Capacity was 6.2 billion available seat miles (ASMs), down 5.8 percent versus May 2008. United Airlines May Consolidated Traffic Results

CHICAGO, June 3, 2009 – United Airlines today reported its preliminary consolidated traffic results for May 2009.

The company reported a May consolidated passenger load factor of 80.0 percent.

Total consolidated revenue passenger miles (RPMs) decreased in May by 12.3 percent on a consolidated capacity decrease of 10.2 percent in available seat miles (ASMs) compared with the same period in 2008.

Argonne Anti-Jet-Lag Diet Helps Summer Travelers Beat Jet Lag

ARGONNE, Ill. (June 2, 2009) – As the summer travel season begins, many vacation and business travelers will beat jet lag with the Anti-Jet-Lag Diet developed at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory.
