New York Yankees to Play Final Home Opener in Current Yankee Stadium

03/27/2008 -- The New York Yankees will open the 2008 Championship Season-the 106th in franchise history and the 84th and final season at the current Yankee Stadium-on Monday, March 31 vs. the Toronto Blue Jays at 1:05 p.m.

Originally constructed prior to the 1923 season, Yankee Stadium was remodeled in 1974 and 1975. The club will move into a new state-of-the-art Yankee Stadium across the street from the current Stadium in 2009.

Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson will throw out the game's ceremonial first pitch in a season that marks the 30th anniversary of the Yankees' 1978 World Championship campaign. Public address announcer Bob Sheppard will not attend the game as he continues to recuperate from illness. His longtime backup, Jim Hall, will serve in his place.    » read more »

Toronto Blue Jays Sign Armando Benitez

03/11/2008 -- The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have agreed to terms on a minor league contract with RHP ARMANDO BENITEZ.

ARMANDO BENITEZ, 35, split last season between the San Francisco Giants and Florida Marlins of the National League. He was a combined 2-8 with an ERA of 5.37 and 17 saves in 54 games. The 6'4" 260 lb. right-hander has played for six teams spanning a 14-year career, highlighted by 289 career saves. He has recorded three seasons of 40+ saves, including 47 with the Florida Marlins in 2004.

Toronto Blue Jays Announce 2008 TV Schedule

144 games all available in high definition

02/21/2008 -- The Toronto Blue Jays have partnered with Rogers Sportsnet, CBC and TSN to broadcast 144 games during the 2008 season. For the first time in the clubs history, all broadcasts will be shown in high definition by all three networks.

Rogers SPORTSNET, now entering its tenth season as a Blue Jays broadcaster, will produce 100 games, including the season opener at Yankee Stadium in New York. The Blue Jays home-opener vs. the World Series Champion Boston Red Sox on April 4 is also featured on the SPORTSNET calendar.    » read more »

02/05/2008 -- The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a one-year contract with OF Alex Rios worth $4.835 million (US).

Alex Rios, 26, originally selected 19th overall in the June 1999 draft, has spent all four seasons of his Major League career with the Toronto Blue Jays. In 161 games last season, the Guaynabo, Puerto Rico native posted career highs in most offensive categories, including 43 doubles, seven triples, 24 home runs and 85 RBI.

Alex Rios led the club in at-bats (643), runs (114), hits (191), total bases (320), triples, stolen bases (17) and slugging percentage (.498).    » read more »

12/12/2007, HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros announced today that the club has claimed right-handed pitcher Ryan Houston off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. The announcement was made by General Manager Ed Wade.

Houston, 28, was 2-2 with a 4.30 ERA and five saves (29ER/60.2IP) in 50 games for Triple A Syracuse of the International League in 2007. He also pitched for Lara in the Venezeulan Winter League during this off-season, posting a 1-0 record with nine saves and a 0.60 ERA (1ER/15IP) in 14 appearances.    » read more »

Toronto Blue Jays Decline Contract to Josh Towers

12/13/2007 -- The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have declined to tender a contract to RHP JOSH TOWERS for the 2008 season.

JOSH TOWERS, 30, appeared in 25 games for Toronto last season making 15 starts and posting a 5-10 record with a 5.38 ERA. In five seasons with the Blue Jays, 2003-2007, the 6-1, 160lb. native of Port Hueneme, California was 38-42 with one save in 113 games, 92 starts.

His best season with Toronto came in 2005, posting a 13-12 record in 33 starts with a 3.71 ERA.
