GAO Finds Farm Payments Influence Landowner's Decisions To Convert Grasslands To Croplands

Sept. 18, 2007 -- Washington, D.C. – A Government Accountability Office (GAO) study released today found that access to commodity programs and to crop insurance is a key factor motivating producers to plow up range land. The report was requested by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, and Congressman Collin Peterson (D-MN), Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture.
