Afghanistan: Afghan Provincial Governor Survives Suicide Bombing

22 August 2007 -- Afghan officials say a provincial governor has survived a suicide car bomb attack that killed his bodyguard.

The bomber rammed his explosive-laden car into vehicles carrying Khost governor Arsala Jamal and his entourage Wednesday.

Officials say seven people were hurt in the attack which they call an assassination attempt.

Also Wednesday, NATO says Taleban militants attacked one of its bases in eastern Nuristan province, killing two Afghan soldiers and wounding 11 U.S. troops.    » read more »

CIA Inquiry on 9/11 Says Agency Lacked Counterterorrism Plan

22 August 2007 -- A newly released report by the inspector general for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) says the former head of the agency failed to develop an effective counterterrorism strategy before the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

Pakistan: Car Bomber Kills Three Soldiers in Northwest Pakistan

20 August 2007 -- A Pakistani suicide bomber drove his explosives-laden car into a military checkpoint near the Afghan border Monday, killing three soldiers and wounding more than a dozen people.

The attack took place outside the town of Thal in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province.

The country has experienced a surge of violence since a 10-month peace deal with pro-Taleban militants, designed to drive out extremists from North Waziristan, broke down last month.    » read more »

Ethiopia: Ethiopian Police Say They Have Foiled Terrorist Plot

15 August 2007 -- Police in Ethiopia say they have prevented a rebel group called the Oromo Liberation Front from carrying out a plan to bomb public buildings and assassinate officials in the Ethiopian city of Nazareth. Ethiopia's government in Addis Ababa also accuses neighboring Eritrea of sponsoring the alleged plot.

The state-run Ethiopian News Agency reports that members of the national police anti-terrorism task force have detained a number of people they believe had responsibility for coordinating and carrying out the plot.    » read more »

US Military Announces Capture of 3 Suspected Terrorists with Alleged Iranian Ties

31 July 2007 (By VOA News) -- The U.S. military in Iraq says coalition forces have captured three suspected terrorists who have ties to Iran's Revolution Guards Qods Force.

A military statement said the three were captured during a U.S. raid on a suspected hideout in Baghdad's Shi'ite majority Shulah neighborhood. It said four terrorists were killed during the operation.

Officials said the captured individuals are believed to be part of a weapons smuggling ring from Iran that imports deadly "explosively formed penetrators." Officials did not reveal the suspects' nationality.    » read more »
