Tennis: Roger Federer, Marat Safin Advance to Wimbledon's 3rd Round

28 June 2007 -- World number one men's tennis player Roger Federer of Switzerland and Marat Safin of Russia have advanced to the third round of the Wimbledon tennis championships in London.

Federer won his 50th straight match on grass when he earned a rain-delayed three-set victory over Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro 6-2, 7-6, 6-1. Federer was leading the match two sets to none when play was suspended Wednesday because of rain.

In the third round, Federer takes on Safin, a straight-sets winner over Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan (6-4, 6-2, 7-6).    » read more »

Justine Henin: Henin Advances to 3rd Round of Wimbledon

27 June 2007 -- Top-seeded Justine Henin of Belgium has advanced to the third round of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Russia's Vera Dushevina.

Men's top-seed Roger Federer of Switzerland also appears to be on the way to the third round. He was leading 18-year-old Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro 6-2, 7-5, 2-0 Wednesday when rain forced play to be suspended for the second time of the day.    » read more »

26 June 2007 -- French Open tennis champion Rafael Nadal of Spain and fourth seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia have advanced to the second round of the Wimbledon championships in London.

The second-seeded Nadal scored a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 win over American Mardy Fish, while Djokovic dismissed Potito Starace of Italy, 6-0, 6-3, 6-4.

Sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko knocked out countryman Evgeny Korolev, (7-6, 6-4, 7-6) number seven Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic eliminated Nicolas Massu of Chile (7-6, 6-4, 6-2) and number nine American James Blake topped Russia's Igor Andreev, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.    » read more »

25 June 2007 -- World number one tennis player Roger Federer of Switzerland has opened his campaign for a fifth straight Wimbledon crown with a straight-sets win, after the start of play at London's All-England Club was delayed more than two hours by rain.

The top-seeded Federer faced little opposition after skies cleared Monday, dominating Russia's Teimuraz Gabashvili, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. 20 June 2007 -- Roger Federer of Switzerland and Spain's Rafael Nadal have been named the top two men's seeds at the Wimbledon tennis Championships, which get under way Monday in London.

Federer will be trying for his fifth straight title on the grass courts of the All England Club, after he beat Nadal in last year's final. But Nadal, who has dominated Federer on clay, is expected to give Federer a bigger challenge this year. 06 June 2007 -- Two-time defending champion Justine Henin of Belgium takes on Jelena Jankovic of Serbia while Maria Sharapova of Russia faces another Serb - Ana Ivanovic - in the French Open women's semifinals in Paris Thursday.

Henin has beaten Jankovic every time they have played, including three times this year. In their last meeting, Henin defeated the Serbian player in three sets on clay last month in Berlin (3-6, 6-4, 6-4). 03 June 2007 -- World number one men's tennis player Roger Federer of Switzerland has tied the Grand Slam record for most consecutive sets won in the modern Open era.

Federer pushed his streak to 35 Sunday at the French Open in Paris by beating Russian Mikhail Youzhny, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. Federer also matched another Open-era Grand Slam mark with 11 straight-set victories in a row as he reached the quarterfinal round. Serena Williams Knocked Out of Italian Open Tennis Tournament

18 May 2007 -- Australian Open tennis champion Serena Williams of the United States has been knocked out of the Italian Open women's clay court tournament in Rome.

Williams lost a hard-fought, three-set quarterfinal match to Switzerland's Patty Schnyder in a third-set tiebreaker 6-3, 2-6, 7-6. The win is only the second time in eight meetings that the Swiss player has beaten Williams.

In the semifinals, Schnyder will take on Serbian Jelena Jankovic, the world number-five player, who easily advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 win Friday over Elena Dementieva of Russia.    » read more »

Tennis: Rafael Nadal Continues Clay Court Winning Streak

11 May 2007 -- World No. 2 men's tennis player Rafael Nadal of Spain has continued his record winning streak on clay courts by reaching the semifinals of the Rome Masters tennis tournament.

Nadal, 20, captured his 75th straight win on clay with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Novak Djokovic of Serbia. The milestone ties John McEnroe's record of 75 match wins indoors on carpet between 1983 and 1985.
