Minnesota Health Officials Call For Closer Attention To Swimming Pool Safety

Illnesses, injuries occur each year that can be prevented with better practices

April 9, 2008 -- While the vast majority of swimming pools in the state are operated safely, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) each year investigates a number of incidents involving pools where the public’s health and safety were put at risk.

NCAA Resolves Indiana University of Pennsylvania Infractions Case Through Summary Disposition

Tuesday, October 30, 2007, INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division II Committee on Infractions has penalized Indiana University of Pennsylvania for major violations in its men’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming program. The violations include two charges of unethical conduct, a failure to monitor and impermissible benefits.

Penalties for the violations include placing the university on probation for two years; reducing the number of scholarships for both programs; a vacation of select swimming records; and placing the former head swimming coach on a two-year show cause order.    » read more »

Whitney Myers Named NCAA Woman of the Year

Saturday, October 27, 2007, INDIANAPOLIS --- Whitney Myers, a former swimming student-athlete at the University of Arizona, is the 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year.

Myers received the award—one of the most prestigious that the NCAA bestows—at the 17th annual NCAA Woman of the Year Awards Dinner tonight, October 27, at the Murat Centre Egyptian Room. The award honors female student-athletes who have completed their eligibility and demonstrated academic and athletics excellence, as well as community service and leadership.    » read more »

American Swimmer Kate Ziegler Sets 1,500 Meter Freestyle Record

18 June 2007 -- Swimming's oldest world record has been broken. American Kate Ziegler shattered the 1,500 meter freestyle record by 9.5 seconds late Sunday at a meet in Mission Viejo, California.

Ziegler won the 30-lap race at the TYR Meet of Champions in 15 minutes, 42.54 seconds, easily erasing Janet Evans' mark (15:52.10) set in 1988.

U.S. national team coach Mark Schubert told the Associated Press Ziegler was so excited when she looked at the scoreboard after the race that she nearly "jumped out of the pool."    » read more »
