Senator Jack Reed Urges HUD to Hold Loan Servicers Accountable
June 9, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, DC – As foreclosure rates around the country continue to rise, it has become increasingly difficult for many homeowners seeking to modify their mortgages to get a hold of their loan servicers. In an effort to help struggling homeowners and ensure that banks and loan servicers are held accountable to requests for help, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) and 14 of his Senate colleagues sent a letter to Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan urging HUD to develop and implement a strategy requiring banks and loan servicers, particularly those that have agreed to participate in the Obama Administration’s foreclosure prevention initiatives, to respond to homeowners in a timely fashion. » read more »
NY Governor Paterson Announces $59 Million To Assist Communities Affected By Foreclosure And Subprime Crises
Neighborhood Stabilization Program to Provide for Purchase and Renovation of Foreclosed Properties across New York
April 14, 2009 -- New York Governor David A. Paterson today announced the award of $59 million in Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) grants to assist communities affected by the foreclosure and subprime mortgage crises. The NSP awards will be distributed to 29 projects throughout the State, allowing for the purchase and redevelopment of foreclosed and abandoned properties. NAACP Files Landmark Lawsuit Today Against Wells Fargo and HSBC
Remedies would benefit millions of potential borrowers
March 13, 2009 -- Today, the NAACP filed separate lawsuits in U.S. District Court in California against two of the country’s largest lenders, Wells Fargo, and HSBC. These lawsuits allege systematic, institutionalized racism in sub-prime home mortgage lending. The remedies being asked for in the lawsuit include measures for increased accountability and transparency.

WV AG Sues Countrywide for Inducing Consumers to Take Out Loans They Couldn't Afford
August 12, 2008 -- West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw filed suit today against Countrywide Financial Corporation, Countrywide Home Loans, Inc., Countrywide Home Loans Servicing, LP, Full Spectrum Lending, Inc. and Angelo R. Mozilo, individually and as CEO of Countrywide Financial Corporation.
Countrywide made loans to West Virginia consumers on terms that were unaffordable and unconscionable. These loans exposed consumers to foreclosure and loss of their homes. Countrywide also used unfair and deceptive acts or practices to make loans and service loans.
For example, Countrywide induced consumers to take out adjustable rate mortgages that offered a teaser rate for the first 2-5 years, but then reset at a much higher, unaffordable rate. » read more »

The IMF's Regional Outlook (REO) for Europe released today projects economic growth in advanced European economies to slow significantly over the next two years to 1.5 percent in 2008 and 1.4 percent in 2009, from 2.8 percent in 2007.
In Emerging Europe, growth is also expected to moderate, to 5.5 percent in 2008 and 5.2 percent in 2009, down from 6.9 percent in 2007. » read more »
Foreclosure Rescue Company Must Refund 200 Washington Consumers
April 21, 2008 -- SEATTLE – Approximately 200 Washington consumers who paid for a service that they thought would help save their homes from foreclosure will receive partial refunds under a new settlement announced today by the Washington Attorney General’s Office.
The homeowners each paid $1,200-$1,500 to Foreclosure Assistance Solutions LLC, of Clearwater, Fla. More than 70 percent of homeowners who signed up with Foreclosure Assistance Solutions ended up losing their homes anyway. The company went out of business in fall 2007. » read more »
