NCAA Responds to Inaccurate Statements Regarding the Gridiron Bash Concerts

Sunday, March 30, 2008, INDIANAPOLIS---Recent public statements made by MSL Sports Entertainment regarding the postponement of the Gridiron Bash, a commercial event originally planned in conjunction with Division I spring football games, are inaccurate. MSL Sports Entertainment, the organizers of the event, elected to postpone the concerts on their own accord, and not under the direction of the NCAA. We never expressed any concern with the actual event being conducted as scheduled, but only with the participation of student-athletes as part of the for-profit event.    » read more »

NCAA Student-Athletes, Local Volunteers, Lowe’s Join Habitat for Humanity for Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Build

Wednesday, March 19, 2008, BATON ROUGE, La. -- During the first- and second- rounds of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship, the NCAA, Lowe’s, Habitat for Humanity International and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge will team up to build a home in partnership with a hard-working, low-income family that was displaced by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita.

Louisiana State University student-athletes, local community and Lowe’s volunteers will construct a Habitat for Humanity house frame on Saturday, March 22 at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La. The build will take place near the university’s track and field complex.    » read more »

NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions Penalizes Texas Christian University Men's Tennis Program

Thursday, February 28, 2008, INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions has penalized Texas Christian University for major and secondary violations in its men's tennis program. This case involves impermissible phone contacts and a failure to monitor by the institution and the former head coach.

The violations include 105 impermissible phone calls made by members of the men's tennis coaching staff to 24 prospective student-athletes during the four years from summer of 2002 through the spring of 2006. More than 70 calls were made by the former head coach.    » read more »

NCAA Awards Postgraduate Scholarships for Student-Athletes Who Competed in Fall Sports in 2007-08

NCAA Football Rules Committee Proposes Rules to Enhance Student-Athlete Safety and Encourage Consistent Pace of Play

Wednesday, February 13, 2008, INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Football Rules Committee proposed changes intended to enhance and more strictly enforce rules related to student-athlete safety. The committee, which met February 11-13, addressed helmet contact, players that target a defenseless opponent, horse collar tackling, and enhanced rules dealing with dangerous chop blocks. Additionally, after a year of consideration, the committee proposed a 40/25 second play clock system to encourage a consistent pace of play.    » read more »

NCAA Responds to Recent Media Reports Regarding Initial Eligibility of Iowa State Freshman

Wednesday, November 7, 2007 -- Recent media reports from the Des Moines Register and other outlets regarding the initial eligibility of Iowa State freshman Lucca Staiger are inaccurate.

In these press reports, it has been stated that Iowa State has filed an appeal with the NCAA regarding this student-athlete. This is not accurate. In fact, the NCAA did not receive the facts of the case from the school until yesterday (Tuesday, November 6). The NCAA is now reviewing these facts and has not yet issued a decision. Thus, an appeal has not been filed.    » read more »

NCAA Announces Recipients of 2008 Award of Valor and Inspiration Award

Monday, November 5, 2007, INDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA Honors Committee has named 1st Lt. Emily Perez and Major Doug Zembiec as posthumous recipients of the 2008 Award of Valor and chose James MacLaren as the 2008 Inspiration Award winner.

The U.S. Military Academy’s Perez and the U.S. Naval Academy’s Zembiec, who are both deceased, and Yale University’s MacLauren will be recognized during the 2008 Honors Celebration in January at the NCAA Convention in Nashville.    » read more »
