USDA: Agriculture Census Data Now Available for American Indian Reservations
WASHINGTON, June 19, 2009 – Information from the 2007 Census of Agriculture is now available for 73 American Indian reservations, including reservation-level information on agricultural production, economics and demographics for individual farms.
"USDA is committed to ensuring that every farmer and rancher has an equal voice and representation in the Census of Agriculture," said Carol House, deputy administrator for USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). "As part of this commitment, we've worked closely with our tribal partners to improve our data collection efforts in Indian country." » read more »
Downward Mobility and Recovery Rates Stagnant
Rates Remain Virtually Unchanged Since the Late 1960s
Washington, DC - 06/18/2009 - According to a new report from Pew’s Economic Mobility Project, the likelihood that Americans experience a two- or ten-year income drop has been consistent over the last forty years. Recovery rates from those losses have also been constant—half of adults who suffer a two-year income loss of more than 25 percent recover within four years. However, half of those suffering such a drop over ten years fall permanently behind their peers and do not fully recover. » read more »
Iowa Governor Culver on May 2009 Unemployment Rate
June 19, 2009 -- DES MOINES – Iowa Governor Chet Culver responded to the latest unemployment figures released today. Iowa Workforce Development announced that the state’s unemployment rate for May was 5.8%, up from 5.1% in April.
Governor Culver’s Statement:
"Iowa's latest unemployment figures are one more sign of the impact the national economic recession is having on our state. Throughout this recession, I have directed Iowa Workforce Development to do everything possible to help Iowans who lose their jobs. And I am proud that Iowa was the first state in the nation to make improvements, under President Obama’s federal recovery program, to our unemployment insurance program to provide people with extra help and support in order to find new jobs. » read more »
Pew: 61% of American Adults Look Online for Health Information
Washington, DC - 06/11/2009 - A majority of American adults look online for health information and most are accessing reviews and comments posted by fellow consumers.
According to a report released today by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project and the California HealthCare Foundation, 61% of adults look online for health information. Of those, 59% have done at least one of the following activities:
* Read someone else's commentary or experience about health or medical issues on an online news group, website, or blog
* Consulted rankings or reviews online of doctors or other providers
* Consulted rankings or reviews online of hospitals or other medical facilities

Nielsen Shows Big Drop in US Advertising Spending
U.S. Ad Spending Fell 12% in the First Quarter, Nielsen Reports
NEW YORK, NY June 8, 2009 – The Nielsen Company reported today that U.S. advertising for the first quarter 2009 was down 12% compared to the first quarter 2008. Preliminary figures show that U.S. ad expenditures declined $3.8 billion to a total spend of $27.9 billion in the first quarter.
All measured media showed negative growth in this difficult economy, ranging from Spanish-Language Cable TV (-1.1%) to Local Sunday Supplements (-37.7%).

June 9, 2009 -- The nation’s largest airlines had a rate of on-time flights this past April that was higher than both the same month last year and the mark posted in March 2009, according to the Air Travel Consumer Report released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). June 3, 2009 -- New data from the U.S. Census Bureau show that 62 percent of households reported using Internet access in the home in 2007, an increase from 18 percent in 1997, the first year the bureau collected data on Internet use. (See Table 1.) Sixty-four percent of individuals 18 and over used the Internet from any location in 2007, while only 22 percent did so in 1997. (See table 2.) June 1, 2009 -- Washington D.C. -- According to the FBI's Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report released today, the nation experienced a 2.5 percent decrease in the number of violent crimes and a 1.6 percent decline in the number of property crimes for 2008 compared with data from 2007. The report is based on information that the FBI gathered from 12,750 law enforcement agencies that submitted six to 12 comparable months of data to the FBI for both 2007 and 2008.
