State Farm Statement on Distracted Driving Prevention Act of 2009

The company said this legislation (S. 1938) is a good first step toward addressing the problem of distracted driving and its threat to the lives and safety of millions of drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

Deer-Vehicle Collision Frequency Jumps 18 Percent In Five Years

West Virginia Continues to Lead Collision Likelihood List

Bloomington, Ill., Sept. 28, 2009 – The number of vehicles on U.S. roadways has grown by 7 percent over the last five years. But the number of times those vehicles have collided with deer has swelled by much more than that.

Using its claims data, auto insurer State Farm estimates 2.4 million collisions between deer and vehicles occurred in the U.S. during the two-year period between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2009 (100,000 per month). That’s 18.3 percent more than five years earlier. To put it another way, one of these unfortunate encounters occurs every 26 seconds (although they are much more likely during the last three months of the year and in the early evening).

State Farm Expresses Support For Congressman Kanjorski’s Office Of Insurance Information Legislation

Bloomington, Illinois, June 8, 2009 - Legislation to create an Office of Insurance Information introduced by Rep. Paul Kanjorski (D-PA), Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance and Government-Sponsored Enterprises, received a strong endorsement from State Farm, the nation’s largest insurer of cars and homes in the U.S.

State Farm called the proposal an “important step” in the federal government’s review of insurance regulation across the country. Mike Fernandez, State Farm vice president of public affairs, commended Congressman Kanjorski for his leadership and his introduction of H.R. 2609, The Insurance Information Act of 2009.

Governor Perdue, Georgia DOT and State Farm Insurance Unveil Sponsorship Initiative

May 22, 2009 -- ATLANTA - Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue, Georgia transportation officials and the State Farm Insurance Co. today announced a new collaborative sponsorship designed to create a long-term, supplemental funding source for the Department's Highway Emergency Response Operator (HERO) program.

State Farm Net Worth Drops 16 Percent To $53.3 Billion

Nearly 90 Percent of Decline Due to Drop in Equity Values; $6.3 Billion In Catastrophe Losses Well Above Expected Levels

Bloomington, Ill., Feb. 27, 2009 -- Net worth for the State Farm group decreased in 2008 by $10.4 billion to end the year at $53.3 billion. The primary reason for the decrease was the $9.2 billion decline in the value of the property-casualty (P-C) companies’ unaffiliated stock portfolio (net of deferred tax). Although this decline was driven by general market conditions, State Farm’s P-C portfolio had a smaller percentage decline than the broader equity market.

Louisiana Attorney General's Office Files Suit Against Insurance Companies

November 8, 2007: (Baton Rouge, LA) — Louisiana Attorney General Charles C. Foti, Jr. announced today that his office has filed suit against Allstate Insurance Company, Lafayette Insurance Company, Xactware, Inc., Marshall & Swift/Boeckh, LLC, Insurance Services Office, Inc., State Farm Fire and Casualty Company, USAA Casualty Insurance Company, Farmers Insurance Exchange, Standard Fire Insurance Company and McKinsey & Company for alleged violations of the Louisiana Monopolies Act.

Florida Attorney General, Office of Insurance Regulation Reach $46 Million State Farm Settlement

October 2, 2007 -- TALLAHASSEE, FL – Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum today announced that the Attorney General’s Office and the Office of Insurance Regulation have reached a $46 million settlement with State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and State Farm Fire and Casualty Company, collectively owned by State Farm Insurance. Under the settlement, State Farm will refund excess surcharges amounting to approximately $23 million, plus five percent simple interest, to State Farm policyholders beginning in six months.

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood Sues State Farm for Breach of Contract

June 11, 2007 -- Jackson, Ms – Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood today filed, in the Circuit Court of Hinds County, a complaint against State Farm Fire and Casualty Company for bad faith breach of contract related to the settlement agreement the two parties entered into on January 23, 2007.

“We filed this lawsuit in an effort to help the more than 30,000 Gulf Coast policyholders who have suffered for nearly two years because of State Farm’s inaction,” said Attorney General Jim Hood.
