UN: Floods, Cyclones, Rain Affect Nearly a Million People in Southern Africa

United Nations relief officials say nearly a million people across Southern Africa have suffered damaging effects from recent floods, cyclones and heavy rains.

The officials say severe weather that began last October has disrupted the lives of about 987,000 people.

They say Madagascar has been hardest hit, with more than 332,000 people affected by several cyclones and floods.

The floods and cyclones have destroyed homes, roads and crops across the region. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says many families are living in temporary shelters, while others have lost their cattle and livelihoods.

The U.N. says the worst weather is over for another year, but problems could persist through the end of April.    » read more »

12 November 2007 -- Experts on lung disease meeting in South Africa are warning the world could face a tuberculosis crisis if drug resistant strains of TB are not contained and if TB testing does not become a regular part of HIV treatment.

Mining Accident in South Africa Traps 3,000; Rescue Ops Under Way

UN Unanimously Approves Peacekeeping Force for Sudan's Darfur Region

South Africa: Johannesburg Gets First Snow Since 1981

27 June 2007 -- The first measureable snowfall in almost 26 years has blanketed Johannesburg, South Africa, closing roads, delaying flights and claiming at least one life.

Weather officials say as many as 10 centimeters of snow fell over the area Tuesday night and early Wednesday. Children were seen playing in area parks, while others were saving snowballs as souvenirs of the fast-melting snow.

The officials say the last recorded snowfall for the area was in September of 1981. Temperatures Wednesday dipped below freezing in several areas.    » read more »
