October 25, 2011 - Washington, D.C. - As part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s SunShot Initiative, Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced a $60 million investment over 3 years for applied scientific research to advance cutting-edge Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) technologies. CSP technologies use mirrors to reflect and concentrate sunlight to produce heat, which can then be used to produce electricity.
October 17, 2011 -- DENVER – "Fourteen new solar carports that if the panels were laid end to end would span nearly 5.5 miles are now installed and will produce approximately 1.6 megawatt-hours per year at four Denver Federal Center buildings." This final phase completes GSA’s largest single solar installation in the United States. Nearly 7 megawatts of additional renewable power will be online by the end of the year, saving approximately $500,000 in electricity costs annually for the campus. This project, combined with two other solar projects, will provide more than 15 percent of campus electrical needs, enough to power 1,064 residential homes for one year.
09/20/2011 -- CLARK COUNTY, Nevada – Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today visited the Silver State North Solar Project, a renewable energy project under construction on U.S. public lands in southern Nevada. With an estimated completion date in December, First Solar Inc.’s 50-megawatt facility would be the first large-scale solar project on public lands to contribute power to the grid.
September 13, 2011 - Washington D.C. --- U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced the Energy Department finalized a $1.2 billion loan guarantee to Mojave Solar LLC for the development of the Mojave Solar Project (MSP). When complete, the 250MW solar generation project located in San Bernardino County, California will increase the nation’s currently installed concentrating solar power (CSP) capacity by approximately 50 percent. Abengoa Solar Inc., the project sponsor, estimates it will fund more than 900 construction and permanent operations jobs.
UPTON, NY — Daniel Nocera, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor whose recent research focuses on solar-powered fuels, will give a BSA Distinguished Lecture, titled “Harnessing Energy from the Sun for Six Billion People — One at a Time,” on Thursday, September 8, at 4 p.m. in Berkner Hall at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory. BSA Distinguished Lectures are sponsored by Brookhaven Science Associates, the company that manages Brookhaven Lab, to bring topics of general interest before the Laboratory community and the public. The lecture is free, and no preregistration is required. All visitors to the Laboratory 16 and older must bring a photo ID.
September 1, 2011 -- Companies with innovative, game-changing ways to lower the cost of solar energy have been awarded $5.8 million to work with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
The SunShot Incubator Program is an expansion of DOE's successful PV Technology Incubator Program, launched in 2007, which to date has funded $60 million in projects and leveraged $1.3 billion in private investment.
Its primary goal is to advance the timeline and commercial potential of new manufacturing processes and products with the potential for dramatic price improvements.
September 7, 2011 - Washington D.C. – U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced the offer of a conditional commitment for a partial guarantee of a $344 million loan that will support the SolarStrong Project, which is expected to be a record expansion of residential rooftop solar power in the United States. Under the SolarStrong Project, SolarCity Corporation will install, own and operate up to 160,000 rooftop solar installations on as many as 124 U.S. military bases in up to 33 states. SolarCity expects the project to fund approximately 750 construction jobs over five years and 28 full time operating jobs. Many of the jobs are expected to be filled by U.S.
August 19, 2011 -- Washington D.C. – U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the Department has finalized a $197 million loan guarantee to SoloPower, Inc. The loan guarantee will support the construction and operation of state-of-the-art thin-film solar module manufacturing facilities at two sites in Portland, Oregon and an existing site in San Jose, California. When completed and at full capacity, the facilities are expected to produce over 400 megawatts of flexible photovoltaic (PV) modules annually. SoloPower estimates the project will create approximately 450 permanent jobs and 270 construction jobs.
08/10/2011 -- WASHINGTON, DC – Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today approved the Desert Sunlight Solar Farm, a 550-megawatt (MW) solar power project to be built in the California desert east of Palm Springs. The solar-photovoltaic facility will create more than 630 jobs at peak construction and infuse an estimated $336 million into the local economy. When built, Desert Sunlight will generate enough energy to power over 165,000 homes.
August 5, 2011 - Washington D.C. – U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced that the Department of Energy finalized a $967 million loan guarantee to Agua Caliente Solar, LLC.
The loan guarantee will support the construction of the Agua Caliente Solar project, a 290-megawatt photovoltaic solar generating facility in Yuma County, Arizona that will use thin film solar panels manufactured by First Solar, Inc. The project sponsor, NRG Solar LLC, estimates the photovoltaic generation facility will fund approximately 400 construction jobs and 10 full time operating jobs, and will be one of the largest plants of its kind in the world when completed.
