Sen. Begich Statement on MMS Decision to Approve Leases in Beaufort Sea

October 19, 2009 -- U.S. Senator Mark Begich issued the following statement today after learning The Department of Interior's Minerals Management Service (MMS) has approved, with conditions, Shell Offshore, Inc.'s Exploration Plan to explore two leases in the Beaufort Sea:

First commercial passenger flight powered by fuel made from natural gas lands in Qatar

Qatar Airways makes historic journey from London to Gatwick to Doha --- New Gas to Liquids fuel offers diversity of supply and better local air quality to busy airports.

12/10/2009 -- A Qatar Airways aircraft this evening completed the world’s first commercial passenger flight powered by a fuel made from natural gas.

The historic journey from London Gatwick to Doha took over six hours and was operated with an Airbus A340-600 aircraft using Rolls-Royce Trent 556 engines.

Shell developed and produced the 50-50 blend of synthetic Gas to Liquids (GTL) kerosene and conventional oil-based kerosene fuel. The State of Qatar is set to become the world’s leading producer of GTL kerosene when it is put into commercial production from 2012.    » read more »

Shell Pumps Biofuels at Le Mans

Shell blends advanced biofuel into Shell V-Power gasoline race fuel at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race

11/06/2009 -- Shell is demonstrating its commitment to fuels innovation and the development of sustainable, low-carbon fuels with the blending of 10% cellulosic ethanol into its Shell V-Power race fuel at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, in France on 13 June, 2009.

This will be the first time an advanced biofuel has been used in the gasoline at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

Cellulosic ethanol, as an end fuel, is identical to ethanol but it can offer up to 90% less lifecycle CO2 emissions than gasoline.

The biofuel is produced at Iogen Energy Corporation’s demonstration plant in Ottawa, Canada. Iogen and Shell are partners in the plant.    » read more »

Shell to Offer Wheat Straw Biofuel

Shell first to sell gasoline blended with advanced biofuel

10/06/2009 -- From today, customers at a Shell service station will become the first in the world to fill their tanks with gasoline containing advanced biofuel made from wheat straw.

For one month starting June 10, the regular gasoline purchased at a Shell service station in Ottawa, Canada will contain 10% cellulosic ethanol. The biofuel is produced locally from non-food raw materials at Iogen Energy Corporation’s demonstration plant, using advanced conversion processes. Iogen and Shell are partners in the plant, which now produces 40,000 litres of fuel per month.    » read more »

Shell Settles Wiwa Case With Humanitarian Gesture

08/06/2009 -- Shell today agreed to settle a court case in New York related to allegations in connection with the Nigerian military government's execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and others in 1995, making a humanitarian gesture to set up a trust fund to benefit the Ogoni people.

At the same time, the plaintiffs have dismissed all claims made in the litigation against Shell Petroleum NV, Shell Transport and Trading Company Limited and the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC).    » read more »

Royal Dutch Shell plc Announces New Senior Management Structure

27/05/2009 -- Royal Dutch Shell plc (“Shell”) today announced a series of changes to senior management roles and responsibilities, aimed at sharper focus on operating performance and technology. The changes will be effective as of 1st July 2009.

Peter Voser, who takes over from Jeroen van der Veer as Chief Executive Officer on 1st July 2009 said “this new structure will increase accountability in the company, and improve Shell’s performance on delivering new projects and developing new technologies.”

Sierra Club Works to Protect Yampa River from Oil Industry Water Grab

Shell Oil Co. Wants Nearly One-Tenth of Water for Dirty Oil Shale Development

February 27, 2009 -- STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO - The Sierra Club is fighting to protect a key river in northwestern Colorado from a water grab by the oil industry.

In December, Shell Oil Co. applied to state water court for rights to divert nearly one-tenth of the Yampa River's water into a massive reservoir, where it would be kept for future development of oil shale, an unproven fossil fuel that requires tremendous quantities of water and energy to produce.

In an effort to protect the Yampa River and the fish, wildlife, and communities that depend on it, the Sierra Club filed a statement of opposition in Colorado Water Court today to block Shell's request.    » read more »

Agreement Means New Jobs for U.S. Mariners on LNG Tankers

Friday, February 8, 2008 -- New seafaring jobs on Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) vessels will go to Americans licensed as ships’ officers under an agreement reached between the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Shell International Trading Company.

U.S. EPA Reaches Milestone at One of the Most Contaminated Sites in the U.S., Cleaning Up More Than 11 Tons of Toxins

February 5, 2008, SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Shell Oil Company have removed more than 23,000 pounds of hazardous toxins from the Del Amo Superfund Site Waste Pits near Torrance, Calif.

With EPA oversight, responsible parties Shell Oil Company and the U.S. General Services Administration built a soil vapor extraction system at the Del Amo Waste Pits and have been successfully operating it for one year. 12 November 2007 -- As the price of oil soars on world markets and demand for energy grows, energy companies are looking at so-called unconventional sources such as Canada's oil sands and the vast deposits of oil shale in the Rocky Mountain states. Geologists say half of the world's known oil shale lies deep underground in western Colorado, eastern Utah and southern Wyoming, amounting to more than one trillion barrels of potential oil. August 15, 2007, Juneau, Alaska - Alaska Governor Sarah Palin released the following statement today with regard to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling on Shell Oil:

“I am very disappointed in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling blocking Shell Oil Company from drilling in the Beaufort Sea.
