Earthquakes in Rwanda, Congo Kill 39, Injure 400
03 February 2008 -- Two strong earthquakes rocked parts of Rwanda and the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo Sunday morning, killing at least 39 people and injuring nearly 400 others.
Local officials say many people were at Sunday church services when the quakes hit the western Great Rift Valley, a seismically active area.
The U.S. Geological Survey measured the first quake at magnitude 6. It jolted Bukavu, n Congo's South Kivu province, where at least five people died.
The second shock hit Rwanda a few hours later with magnitude 5 force, killing at least 34 people. » read more »

Nov 13, 2007 -- BUGESERA REGION, Rwanda — A young Rwandan boy leaves barefoot on a 3-mile walk to retrieve water for his family who lives in a home with no electricity or running water. The six-mile commute consumes most of his day, keeping him from enrolling in school.
The Bugesera region of eastern Rwanda has solved the problem of water versus school, by building the Shyara School across the street from a communal well. Now children can bring empty water containers to school and fill them when school is dismissed. » read more »
Paris Hilton Postpones Rwanda Trip
26 October 2007, Washington (By Ray McDonald) -- Paris Hilton's philanthropic trip to Rwanda has been postponed.
"Due to the restructuring of the Playing For Good Foundation, the philanthropic trip to Rwanda that the foundation had previously planned with Paris Hilton has been postponed," the children's charity said in an October 25 statement.
A staffer for the organization's spokesman Andy Gelb said he was unavailable for comment. The 26-year-old socialite, who has promised to use her celebrity status for good causes, was to have traveled to the central African nation in November. » read more »
