Zimbabwe: Embattled Mugabe Turns To War Veterans For Support

28 August 2007 -- Facing widespread popular disenchantment as the economic collapse turns into a grave crisis, President Robert Mugabe has once again turned to the liberation war veterans to shore up his support and, some say, intimidate a restive population.

Often deployed in the past as administration shock troops, veterans of the 1980s war against colonial, white-ruled Rhodesia, have called a solidarity march on Wednesday in Harare and urged ZANU-PF loyalists to assemble at the party's headquarters.    » read more »

Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe Newspapers Warn of New Water, Food Shortages

27 August 2007 -- State media in Zimbabwe are warning of new problems in the nation's food and water supplies.

The Herald newspaper reports Monday that three major producers of crop fertilizer have closed because of power cuts and a lack of raw materials.

It says the three companies, Dorowa Mine, Iron Duke Mine, and Zimphos, stopped operating last month.

A report today in the state-run Chronicle says the government's grain distribution body, the Grain Marketing Board, has failed to collect corn from farmers in rural areas due to poor roads and a shortage of bags.    » read more »

Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe’s Opposition MDC Leader on Democracy After Mugabe

28 August 2007 -- The leader of Zimbabwe’s Main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Morgan Tsvangirai says removing President Robert Mugabe does not necessarily mean entrenching democracy in the country. He said it was important first to deal with the political culture of abuse and corruption as a way of setting the country back on the right track.
