NWF: Government to Cut Its Own Emissions 28%, Save Oil, Cut Energy Bill

01-29-2010-- The White House has announced plans to slash the federal government’s global warming pollution by 28% over the next decade. According to the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), the federal government is the nation’s largest energy consumer, with an energy bill of $24.5 billion in 2008.

“We have a responsibility to American citizens to reduce our energy use and become more efficient,” said President Obama in a statement. “Our goal is to lower costs, reduce pollution, and shift Federal energy expenses away from oil and towards local, clean energy.”

Microbes Produce Fuels Directly from Biomass

January 27, 2010 -- A collaboration led by researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) has developed a microbe that can produce an advanced biofuel directly from biomass. Deploying the tools of synthetic biology, the JBEI researchers engineered a strain of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria to produce biodiesel fuel and other important chemicals derived from fatty acids.    » read more »

GA Solar to Build Photovaltaic Solar Project in New Mexico

January 27, 2010 -- SANTA FE -- New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson today announced that Spanish renewable energy company GA-Solar will be building one of the largest photovoltaic solar projects in the world in Guadalupe County. GA-Solar and their parent company, Corporación Gestamp, plan to invest $1 billion in New Mexico in the development of this project.

Jan. 25, 2010 -- CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Duke Energy is adding solar power to its commercial renewable energy portfolio through the acquisition of a large-scale solar photovoltaic project under development in San Antonio, Texas.

Duke Energy Generation Services (DEGS), a Duke Energy Commercial Businesses unit that owns and develops renewable power assets, will purchase the Blue Wing Solar Project from juwi solar Inc., based in Boulder, Colo. U.S. Wind Energy Industry Breaks All Records in 2009

January 26, 2010 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. wind industry broke all previous records by installing nearly 10,000 megawatts (MW) of new generating capacity in 2009 (enough to serve over 2.4 million homes), but still lags in manufacturing, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) said today in its Q4 report.
