Guantanamo Bay Detainee Transfer Announced
June 19, 2007 -- The Department of Defense announced today the transfer of six detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Two detainees were transferred to Tunisia and four detainees were transferred to Yemen. These detainees were determined to be eligible for transfer following a comprehensive series of review processes at Guantanamo Bay.
Approximately 80 detainees remain at Guantanamo who the U.S. government has determined eligible for transfer or release. Departure of these remaining detainees is subject to ongoing discussions between the United States and other nations. » read more »

June 06, 2007 -- The Department of Defense announced today the transfer of a dangerous terror suspect to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Abdullahi Sudi Arale is suspected of being a member of the Al Qaeda terrorist network in East Africa, serving as a courier between East Africa Al Qaeda (EAAQ) and Al Qaeda in Pakistan. Since his return from Pakistan to Somalia in September 2006, he has held a leadership role in the EAAQ-affiliated Somali Council of Islamic Courts (CIC). » read more »

California Governor Joins 16 Governors in Push for More Federal Funding to Offset State Prison Costs for Undocumented Residents
05/31/2007 -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, joined by Governors from 16 other states, today sent the following letter to Senate and House appropriations leaders urging them to provide $950 million in federal funding for the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP). This program partially reimburses states and local governments for costs to incarcerate undocumented residents who have been convicted of criminal offenses. California Responds to Federal Courts with Plan to Reduce Prison Overcrowding
05/16/2007 -- Today the state of California detailed its aggressive, comprehensive plan to reduce overcrowding in California’s prisons in a court filing with a federal judge contemplating whether an inmate population cap is warranted. Inmate Population To Exceed Budgeted Capacity
May 3, 2007 -- Carson City – Today, Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons toured the Warm Springs Correctional Center (WSCC) with Department of Corrections Director Howard Skolnik to assess the impact of overcrowding at Nevada’s correctional facilities. The most recent expansion project at WSCC brought the budgeted capacity from 260 to 510 inmates. By the end of May 2007, WSCC is expected to fill 603 beds. » read more »
