Most 3- and 4-Year Olds Are Denied Access to Public Preschool Programs
Washington, DC - 03/19/2008 - State-funded preschools served over one million children last year, yet public pre-K was unavailable for most 3- and 4-year-olds, according to the annual survey released today by the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER).
Funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts, The State of Preschool 2007 ranks all 50 states on the percentage of children served and spending per child. It also compares the number of quality benchmarks each state meets for the 2006-2007 school year. The survey found that enrollment, quality and state spending per child increased. » read more »

3/19/2008 -- Today, the National Institute for Early Education Research released its 2006-2007 "State of Preschool Yearbook," the most comprehensive source of information about the state of early childhood education in the U.S. This year’s yearbook reveals that state Pre-K programs have grown to the point where they are now serving more than one million students.
About 22% of 4-year-olds are being served by state preschool programs, and 15% of three year-olds have access to either state or federal programs, such as Head Start. In addition, the per-pupil funding level for early childhood education has grown for the first time since 2002-2003. » read more »
