Senators Lautenberg, Menendez Announce More Than $1 Million for N.J. Sea Grant Program, Oyster Management

April 8, 2008 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) today announced that the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will award the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium (NJMSC) with more than $1 million in federal funds.

The funding will support two separate initiatives: the New Jersey Sea Grant College Program and a study of the disease resistance of oysters.    » read more »

4-Sep-2007 -- A dime-sized tropical crab that has invaded coastal waters in the Southeast United States is having both positive and negative effects on oyster reefs, leaving researchers unable to predict what the creature’s long-term impact will be.

Unlike native crabs that eat baby oysters, mussels and fish, the green porcelain crab Petrolisthes armatus is a filter feeder, extracting its food from the water much as oysters do.    » read more »

Connecticut Attorney General, DEP Commissioner Announce Critical Court Victory Halting Islander East

August 20, 2007 -- Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Gina McCarthy today announced a landmark federal court ruling that effectively stops the proposed Islander East natural gas pipeline project.

The U.S. District Court in Bridgeport set aside a U.S. Secretary of Commerce decision - calling it "arbitrary and capricious" - that overruled Connecticut's objection to the proposed Islander East pipeline for failing to comply with the state's coastal zone management plan.    » read more »
