September 26, 2007 -- Charlotte: New tools will help warn North Carolinians about the dangers of the highly addictive drug methamphetamine, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper announced today.

September 24, 2007 -- LANDISVILLE - A new anti-drug education program was launched today and is now available to all Pennsylvania schools. The program, "Truth & Choices," created by the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office, targets middle school and high school students.

Funds to be Used to Increase Methamphetamine Treatment Services Statewide

September 20, 2007 -- PHOENIX – Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano announced that Arizona is the recipient of an $8.3 million Access to Recovery Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

US Anti-Drug Report Faults Venezuela, Burma

17 September 2007 -- A White House report says Burma and Venezuela failed during the past year to make substantial efforts to curb drug trafficking or cooperate with the United States on the issue. Venezuela and Burma were among 20 countries listed in the report as major drug-producing or narcotics-transiting countries.

Officials here say being on the list of major drug-producing or transit countries does not necessarily mean a government is not trying to deal with the problem.    » read more »

Senator Feinstein Announces Plans to Introduce Legislation to Ensure Retailers Are Compliant with Combat Meth Act Requirements

September 14, 2007 -- Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today announced that she plans to introduce legislation early next week to address a problem that has arisen with the implementation of the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act.

The new legislation would require that distributors of pseudoephedrine products only sell to retailers who have filed self-certifications with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley Accepting Grant Proposals For Oxycontin Settlement Funds

September 05, 2007 --BOSTON - Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley’s Office is now accepting grant applications from qualified municipal coalitions and collaboratives throughout the Commonwealth to subsidize programs directed at combating substance abuse and addiction. The funding for the grants stems from a May 2007 multistate consent judgment against Purdue Pharma, the maker of the narcotic pain medication OxyContin. Glynn, age 47, of Valley Falls, New York, was arraigned August 27, 2007, in Vermont District Court for Bennington County on one count of Obtaining a Regulated Drug by Deceit and one count of Making a False Statement in Records, both felonies. Afghanistan: Afghan Opium Production Sets Record Highs, Says UN Report

27 August 2007 -- The United Nations says Afghanistan's illegal opium production has reached record highs this year, despite a massive anti-narcotics campaign in the war-torn country. A new U.N survey reveals that Afghanistan now produces 93 percent of the world's opium.

According to the report production rose 34 percent this year.

U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime Director Antonio Maria Costa says the war-torn country now accounts for 93 percent of the world's opium supply, the raw ingredient in heroin.    » read more »

Montana Governor Schweitzer Helps Kick Off Addiction Recovery Month

August 27, 2007 -- A kick-off event for National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month is slated for Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007 at 10 a.m. in the Montana Capitol Rotunda.

The focus of the event will be the historic $4 million Legislative funding measure spearheaded by Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer to expand the state’s ability to offer drug and alcohol addiction treatment for low-income citizens.

The event is sponsored in part by the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS). September is national addiction recovery month.    » read more »
