Bill Strengthens Protections for Homeowners, Tenants and Neighborhoods

November 16, 2009 -- New York Governor David A. Paterson and Legislative Leaders today announced passage of the Governor’s Program Bill No. 46, which provides additional critical protections for New York State homeowners, tenants and neighborhoods in the wake of the ongoing foreclosure crisis.

Mortgage Fraud Surge Investigation Nets Over 100 Individuals Throughout Middle District of Florida

November 4, 2009 -- TAMPA -- United States Attorney A. Brian Albritton today announced the results of a nine-month-long Mortgage Fraud Surge investigation that has resulted in charges against more than 100 defendants and involves allegations concerning more than $400 million in loans procured by fraud and more than 700 properties. U.S. Attorney Albritton is holding events throughout the district this week to highlight the announcement.

There are currently mortgage fraud-related charges pending against approximately 500 defendants in federal mortgage fraud cases around the nation. Mortgagee Review Board proposes to permanently withdraw FHA approval from Financial Mortgage USA

October 30, 2009 -- WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development today announced that its Mortgagee Review Board (MRB) is proposing to permanently withdraw the HUD/FHA approval of Financial Mortgage USA, Inc., a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM or reverse mortgage) lender based in Honolulu, Hawaii.

HUD's MRB alleges the Company failed to implement an FHA-required quality control plan; separate its lending operations from those of its affiliated insurance company; conform to prudent lending practices; and properly provide borrowers with housing counseling services.    » read more »

Bank of America Activates 125,000 Home Affordable Trial Modifications

Company Continues Momentum in Comprehensive Effort to Help Struggling Homeowners

CALABASAS, Calif., Oct. 29 -- Bank of America announced today it has surpassed its previously stated target of helping at least 125,000 financially distressed homeowners begin trial modifications through the federal government's Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) by November 1.

Bank of America has initiated nearly one in five HAMP trial modifications industrywide since the company began participating in the program in April. Since beginning its HAMP outreach efforts, the bank's homeownership retention division has contacted nearly 600,000 potentially eligible homeowners to ascertain their interest in HAMP and has extended more than 200,000 offers of trial modifications under the program.    » read more »

Rep. Ellsworth Calls for Homebuyer Tax Credit Extension

October 15, 2009 -- WASHINGTON - A local Congressman is supporting efforts in Congress to extend a popular tax break for new homeowners. Rep. Brad Ellsworth says the First-Time Homebuyers Tax Credit has been wildly successful and should be extended for another year. Congress approved the 8,000 tax credit as part of the Economic Recovery Plan in February, but the program is set to expire on November 30, 2009.

Ellsworth co-sponsored legislation, H.R. 3640, to provide an extension and allow more homebuyers to participate. Specifically, the bill would extend the deadline to December 1, 2010 and open up the credit to all homebuyers purchasing their principal residence. Legislation Passed To Extend First-Time Homebuyer Tax Credit For Military Members Serving Overseas

Members who served out of the country for 90 days or more in 2009 will have an extra year to qualify for the $8,000 credit

October 9, 2009 -- Congresswoman Chellie Pingree voted on October 7 for legislation that grants a one-year extension of the first-time homebuyer tax credit for members of the Armed Forces who served overseas in the last year. The legislation passed the House 416-16.

October 9, 2009 -- Washington, D.C. - Representative Donna F. Edwards (D-MD) introduced legislation that would extend the first-time homebuyer tax credit for six months, H.R. 3773. Rep.
