Hurricane Dean: Mexico Begins to Assess Damage From Hurricane Dean

21 August 2007 -- Mexican officials say no casualties have been reported since Hurricane Dean hit the nation's Caribbean coast and moved inland. The storm may still be a threat as it continues to move west toward central Mexico.

Officials in Mexico's Yucatan peninsula began assessing the damage from Hurricane Dean after the category 5 storm hit the coastline early Tuesday bringing, winds of 265 kilometers per hour.    » read more »

US Deports Immigrant Activist Who Took Refuge in Chicago Church

20 August 2007 -- U.S. immigration authorities have deported a Mexican illegal immigrant who took refuge in a church for a year to avoid being separated from her U.S.-born son.

The pastor of the church, Reverend Walter Coleman, says Elvira Arellano was deported to the Mexican border city of Tijuana late Sunday.

Police arrested the 32-year-old activist earlier Sunday in Los Angeles after she spoke at a rally in support of illegal immigrant rights.    » read more »

Hurricane Dean: Mexico, Belize Issue Warnings Ahead of Hurricane Dean

20 August 2007 -- The governments of Mexico and Belize have issued hurricane warnings as Hurricane Dean churns across the Caribbean, bringing torrential rains and winds of more than 230 kilometers-per-hour.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says a hurricane warning is still in effect for Jamaica, which took a hit Sunday from the extremely dangerous storm. The island nation set up emergency shelters, switched off electricity and told residents to take cover.

The hurricane is moving away from Jamaica overnight, and is expected to pass just south of the Cayman Islands Monday morning.    » read more »
