Mexican Police Discover 164 Illegal Immigrants in Truck

12 November 2007 -- Authorities in Mexico say they have taken into custody 164 illegal Central American immigrants who were inside a truck that was supposed to be carrying aid to victims of recent flooding in the southern state of Tabasco.

The National Migration Institute says 159 Guatemalans and five Hondurans were hiding in the truck when it was stopped for a routine search.

The driver was arrested.

Many Central American migrants pass through southern Mexico en route to the United States to seek work.

US Says Arrests of Illegal Immigrants at Mexican Border Are Down

08 November 2007 -- Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says measures, such as hiring more agents and installing hi-tech detectors, have resulted in 22 percent decrease in arrests of illegal immigrants along the southern U.S border with Mexico. He says this is a sign U.S. authorities are beginning to get control of the border. But a separate U.S. government audit released this week found that thousands of illegal migrants made their way undetected through screening procedures at legal ports of entry, such as airports and land border crossings.    » read more »

One Million People Displaced by Mexico Flooding

05 November 2007 -- Around a million people have now fled their homes in the flooded state of Tabasco in southern Mexico and more rain is expected in the already saturated area. Eight people have died in the disaster and authorities are struggling to assist victims in shelters as well as those who remain stranded. Meanwhile, Mexican authorities say a landslide triggered by flooding in the southern state of Chiapas has buried dozens of homes in San Juan Grijalva. Eight Dead, One Million Homeless in Mexico Floods

04 November 2007 -- Eight people have died and nearly one million are homeless in southern Mexico because of the worst floods in 50 years.

The department of civil defense in Chiapas state reported finding seven bodies between Friday and Saturday. The dead included an undocumented Honduran immigrant.

Flood waters cover more than three quarters of the neighboring state of Tabasco, where one man died last week.

Authorities in Tabasco reported looting of grocery stores and shopping centers on Saturday.    » read more »

Storm Kills at Least 18 Mexican Oil Workers

25 October 2007 -- At least 18 Mexican oil workers are now dead after an accident at an offshore oil drilling facility Tuesday in the Gulf of Mexico.

The accident occurred when an oil drilling rig slammed into a platform during a heavy storm that caused 130 kilometer an hour winds and eight-meter high waves.

Mexico's state-owned energy company Pemex says 86 workers abandoned their drilling platforms and escaped into emergency life rafts. At least 61 people were rescued. Seven other people are missing.    » read more »
