Hawaii Governor Lingle, Superintendent Hamamoto Sign Accord On Common Core Standards For Hawaii Public Schools

June 1, 2009 -- HONOLULU – Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle and State School Superintendent Patricia Hamamoto today announced Hawaii’s participation in a nationwide program led by the states to ensure public school students have the knowledge and skills they need to compete in the global economy.

Governor Lingle and Superintendent Hamamoto have co-signed a Memorandum of Agreement that commits Hawaii to participate in the process of developing a common core of state standards that are internationally benchmarked. Alaska Chooses Not to Participate In Common Core Education Initiative

May 31, 2009, Anchorage, Alaska – Alaska Governor Sarah Palin announced that the State of Alaska has chosen to monitor but not yet actively participate in the upcoming initiative to create nationwide common core state standards in reading and math.

The National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers have announced they intend to work with states to formulate standards in English and math for kindergarten through grade 12 by December 2009.    » read more »

Georgia Governor Signs Bill to Help Recruit More Math, Science Teachers

April 22, 2009 -- ATLANTA – Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue today signed House Bill 280, which will start new fully-certified math and science teachers at the same salary as a fifth year teacher.

“Just as Georgia businesses increase incentives to fill critical positions, we now have the same ability,” said Governor Perdue. “Last year, Georgia produced only one physics teacher. This legislation will help us address the shortage of math and science teachers in the state.”    » read more »

Arkansas Receives $13 Million Grant For Math And Science Education

Aug 30, 2007 -- LITTLE ROCK – Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe today announced that Arkansas is one of only seven states to receive money from a new grant designed to further build upon improvements in Advanced Placement (AP) scores by Arkansas students.

Created by the National Math and Science Initiative, the $13.2-million, six-year grant will fund training and incentive programs for AP and pre-AP courses to better prepare students for college-level work in math, science and engineering.
