BOSTON - Attorney General Tom Reilly issued a warning to Massachusetts consumers to beware of telephone solicitors who offer thousands of dollars in free “government grants†in exchange for a processing fee. The callers often identify themselves as representatives of the United States Government and guarantee consumers large government grants, many for thousands of dollars, but only if the consumer agrees to an automated debit or withdrawal of a processing fee from the consumer’s checking account. Typically the fee is for hundreds of dollars. Eventually, consumers who pay the fees receive only pamphlets and booklets that list government agencies and programs but do not receive any actual grant money. » read more »
