Largest Employer on London Stock Exchange Won't Even Agree to Pay Workers to Keep Up with Inflation
February 01, 2008 -- Malawi--Security guards for G4S in Malawi, struggling to survive on poverty pay, today renewed their threat to strike unless Africa's biggest multinational employer agrees to meet their demand for a 30% raise. The guards, paid on average only £15 ($30 USD) per month - a quarter of a living wage - have turned down the company's 12% offer, which doesn’t even keep up with inflation in Malawi. » read more »
Disastrous Floods in Southern Africa May Get Worse
14 January 2008 -- The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies warns the disastrous floods that have hit Southern Africa are likely to get worse. It says rains are forecast to continue until April.
Rains, which began in early December, have caused many rivers along the Zambezi basin to swell. Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique have experienced severe flooding and the situation is spreading to other countries, notably Malawi, Lesotho and Madagascar. » read more »
Madonna's Home To Be Visited by Malawi Welfare Official
30 August 2007, Washington (By Ray McDonald) -- The Malawi welfare official tasked with assessing Madonna's fitness to adopt a young African boy will next week visit her London home.
Director Penston Kilembe canceled a visit in May, the first of two court-ordered trips to check on the singer's suitability to adopt David Banda.
