Boston Red Sox Clinch MLB Playoff Spot

23 September 2007 -- The Boston Red Sox became the first major league baseball team to clinch a playoff spot, scoring three runs in the ninth inning Saturday to beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 8-6.

Boston Red Sox trailed 6-5 when Jason Varitek led off the ninth with a home run, followed an out later by Julio Lugo's two-run homer.

The New York Yankees trail Boston for the lead in the American League East division, but moved close to clinching at least a wild-card playoff spot with a 10-inning, 12-11 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.    » read more »

09/16/2007, CHICAGO -- Jim Thome of the Chicago White Sox hit his 500th career home run today vs. the Los Angeles Angels.

Jim Thome, 37, hit a game-ending, two-run homer on a 3-2 pitch from Dustin Moseley in the ninth inning to become the 23rd player in major-league history to reach the milestone and just the 10th left-handed batter. - Triple-A Salt Lake INF Kendry Morales was named the Player of the Month after batting .438 (32/73) with 19 runs scored, nine doubles, one triple, four home runs and 17 RBI in 18 games;

03 September 2007 (VOA Sports) -- Slugger Hank Blalock hit a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning to lead the Texas Rangers to an 8-7 win Sunday over the Los Angeles Angels in a key Major League Baseball contest.

02 September 2007 (VOA Sports) -- Rookie Boston Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz threw a no-hitter in just his second major league start, giving Boston a 10-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Hours after being called up from the minor leagues Saturday, the 23-year-old Clay Buchholz baffled the Baltimore Oriole batters.
