CA Governor Schwarzenegger Announces $9.2 Million in Grants to Combat Gang Violence
Funds Will Assist Prevention, Intervention and Enforcement Efforts
03/26/2009 -- As part of his continued commitment to combating gang violence, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced the awarding of more than $9.2 million in competitive grants to provide local assistance funding to 17 cities and 13 community-based organizations in areas with heavy concentrations of gangs. The Governor made the announcement at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Gifts for Guns event where he promoted that program for providing citizens with an incentive to surrender firearms that could potentially be stolen and used in a crime or to injure someone. » read more »

DHS Secretary Napolitano Announces Major Southwest Border Security Initiative
March 24, 2009 -- U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano announced today several Southwest border initiatives designed to crack down on Mexican drug cartels through enhanced border security. The plan calls for additional personnel, increased intelligence capability and better coordination with state, local and Mexican law enforcement authorities.
“This issue requires immediate action,” said Secretary Napolitano. “We are guided by two very clear objectives. First, we are going to do everything we can to prevent the violence in Mexico from spilling over across the border. CT Governor Rell: Stimulus Funds Available To Hire and Retain Police Officers
March 18, 2009 -- Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that she has written to local police chiefs, mayors and first selectmen to inform them that federal stimulus money is now available to hire new police officers or bring back laid-off officers.
The Governor said approximately $1 billion is available nationally and law enforcement agencies must apply for the competitive grants, which are part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. U.S. DOJ Makes Available $1 Billion in Recovery Act Funds for COPS Program
March 16, 2009 -- WASHINGTON – U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced today that the Department of Justice is now accepting applications for $1 billion in Recovery Act Funds for the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Program. Approximately 5,500 law enforcement officer jobs will be created or saved in law enforcement agencies across the country through funding provided by the Department of Justice.
"This investment of Recovery Act funds will pump new resources into our communities through a program with a proven track record," said U.S. Attorney General Holder. March 6, 2009 -- Today President Barack Obama announced that Attorney General Eric Holder and the Department of Justice are making available $2 billion Recovery Act 2009 funding allocations for state and local law enforcement and criminal justice assistance, available through the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program.
This funding will be used to help communities keep their neighborhoods safer with more cops, prosecutors, and probation officers; more radios and equipment; more help for crime victims and more crime prevention programs for youth. » read more »
Arkansas Governor Beebe Announces Intent To Grant Pardons
Mar 6, 2009 -- LITTLE ROCK - Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe today announced his intent to grant 12 pardons. An additional 13 clemency requests were denied and 27 had no action taken upon them. These include requests from both inmates and non-inmates.
The 12 applicants intended for pardons have completed all jail time, fulfilled all parole-and-probationary requirements and paid all fines related to their sentences. There is a 30-day waiting period to receive public feedback on the pardons before final action is taken.

One in 31 U.S. Adults are Behind Bars, on Parole or Probation
Washington, DC - 03/02/2009 - Explosive growth in the number of people on probation or parole has propelled the population of the American corrections system to more than 7.3 million, or 1 in every 31 U.S. adults, according to a report released today by the Pew Center on the States. The vast majority of these offenders live in the community, yet new data in the report finds that nearly 90 percent of state corrections dollars are spent on prisons.
One in 31: The Long Reach of American Corrections examines the scale and cost of prison, jail, probation and parole in each of the 50 states, and provides a blueprint for states to cut both crime and spending by reallocating prison expenses to fund stronger supervision of the large number of offenders in the community. » read more »

California Governor Schwarzenegger Issues Statement on Death of Yolo County Sheriff’s Deputy
06/16/2008 -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today released the following statement regarding the death of Yolo County Sheriff's Deputy Tony Diaz, of Woodland, CA:
"Deputy Tony Diaz was a true hero who sacrificed his life to protect the citizens of his community. The people of California will never forget Tony's selflessness, bravery and tireless dedication to keeping Yolo County safe. Maria and I extend our deepest condolences to Tony's family, friends and fellow officers during this difficult time."
Diaz, 37, died June 15, after being shot during a traffic stop on County Road 5 at County Road 99 in Dunnigan, CA. He was a 10 year veteran of the Yolo County Sheriff's Department. He is survived by three children. » read more »
