US Warns Americans to Avoid Colombian Tourist Town

30 June 2007 -- The U.S. Embassy in Bogota is warning Americans to avoid the Colombian tourist town of Melgar, saying leftist rebels may be planning to target them there.

The embassy said in a statement it has received information indicating the rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, may be preparing a plan against Americans in Melgar.

The diplomatic mission recommended that U.S. citizens avoid travel to the town in Tolima province until further notice, and that Americans already there avoid restaurants, bars and other public places.

Cuban Parliament Says George W. Bush Wants Fidel Castro Eliminated

30 June 2007 -- Cuba's National Assembly has passed a resolution that accuses the Bush administration of wanting to eliminate Fidel Castro.

The National Assembly took action Friday, one day after President Bush made a public comment about the Cuban leader's eventual death.

Mr. Bush said at the U.S. Naval War College in Rhode Island Thursday that "one day, the good Lord will take Fidel Castro away."

Audience members laughed, but President Bush said, "no, no, no" to quiet the crowd.    » read more »

ConocoPhillips Reportedly Breaking Off Negotiations Over Oil Projects in Venezuela

26 June 2007 -- A U.S.-based oil company is reportedly breaking off talks with Venezuelan officials to determine its involvement in an Orinoco Belt oil project, which was nationalized earlier this year by President Hugo Chavez.

News reports late Monday said ConocoPhillips would likely end the talks with Venezuela over compensation for its investments and seek payment through arbitration or the courts.    » read more »

23 Injured in Colombia Bombings

24 June 2007 -- A series of bombings in Colombia's main port city has injured at least 23 people.

Authorities said rebels were behind the explosions which happened late Friday in Colombia's main port city, Buenaventura.

Officials said several children were among the wounded.

Officials say the violence stemmed from a battle between rebels for control of drug trafficking in the port city.

13 May 2007 -- Pope Benedict has asked bishops from Latin America and the Caribbean to be faithful and effective missionaries for the Roman Catholic church. In Sao Paulo, VOA's Brian Wagner reports the pope made the call at the start of a regional conference.
