The Environment Protection Agency and the Department of Energy have just released their new, piping hot automotive fuel economy guide for consumers. The purpose of the guide is to help you find a car that won't force you to sell one of your children into indentured servitude every time you fill up your SUV.

Also, spewing a little less toxic smog into the air when you drive around is apparently good for various public health, geopolitical, economical and environmental reasons, but don't let that stop you. Even totally unenlightened self-interest should be enough to do the job in this case.

September 16, 2011 - WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Secretary Steven Chu joined with Saft America to announce the grand opening of the company’s Jacksonville, Florida, factory, which will produce advanced lithium-ion batteries to power electric vehicles and other applications. Saft America estimates it will create nearly 280 permanent jobs at the factory, and the city of Jacksonville expects an additional 800 indirect jobs to be created within its community. The project has created or preserved an estimated 300 construction jobs.

Department of Energy Finalizes a $967 Million Loan Guarantee to Support the Agua Caliente Solar Project

Arizona Project Expected to Generate Approximately 400 Jobs

August 5, 2011 - Washington D.C. – U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced that the Department of Energy finalized a $967 million loan guarantee to Agua Caliente Solar, LLC.

The loan guarantee will support the construction of the Agua Caliente Solar project, a 290-megawatt photovoltaic solar generating facility in Yuma County, Arizona that will use thin film solar panels manufactured by First Solar, Inc. The project sponsor, NRG Solar LLC, estimates the photovoltaic generation facility will fund approximately 400 construction jobs and 10 full time operating jobs, and will be one of the largest plants of its kind in the world when completed.

Boeing Delivers C-130 AMP Trainers to US Air Force

LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Nov. 23, 2009 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] has completed delivery of two more trainers for the U.S. Air Force's C-130 Avionics Modernization Program (AMP) to Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark. The Avionics Part Task Trainer and Cockpit Familiarization Trainer were declared "Ready for Use" on Sept. 25 and Oct. 22, respectively.

Little Rock's 314th Airlift Wing, Air Education and Training Command will be the government's only location for training C-130 AMP aircrews on the operation of the aircraft's upgraded avionics. Training will begin in October 2010.

"Our team's hard work allowed us to deliver the Part Task Trainer a week early and the Cockpit Familiarization Trainer one month ahead of schedule," said Mark Angelo, C-130 AMP program manager for Boeing.

OSHA Revises Acetylene Standard

11/16/2009 -- WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has revised its acetylene standard. A final rule replaces references to outdated industry standards with updated references reflecting current industry practices.

"This final rule incorporates current technology that enhances OSHA's acetylene standard for improving industry work practices and providing safer workplaces," said acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Jordan Barab. "It exemplifies our mission of providing strong and effective regulations that protect the safety and health of working men and women."
