Makes Loan to Indonesia’s Biggest Geothermal Power Plant
JAKARTA, Indonesia--Wednesday, November 04, 2009-- Tapping into growth in Asia and in renewable energy, GE (NYSE: GE) unit GE Energy Financial Services announced today it has loaned US $50 million to Indonesia’s biggest geothermal power producer, a 220-megawatt emissions-free plant set in a volcanic region of tea and quinine plantations.
The loan for the Wayang Windu plant -- near the town of Pangalengan, 200 kms southeast of Jakarta – represents the first geothermal power investment by GE Energy Financial Services outside the United States, as well as the continued execution of its global growth strategy. » read more »

Indonesian Government Suspends Budget Airline Because of Safety Concerns
19 March 2008 -- The Indonesian government has suspended low-cost air carrier Adam Air, citing safety concerns. The budget carrier has been plagued accidents and mishaps in the last several years.
Indonesia Transport Ministry spokesman Bambang Erfan gave the news.
"The Adam Air has been grounded since last night at zero o'clock," he said. "The director general of civil aviation, the ministry of transportation, has sent a letter to the management of Adam Air that stated operations has already been suspended." » read more »
Earthquake Strikes Indonesia
13 February 2008 -- A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 rocked eastern Indonesia early Thursday, prompting a tsunami alert.
The country's meteorological agency said the tremor was centered 275 kilometers southwest of Maluku province at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The agency said the quake had the potential to cause a tsunami, but later retracted it after no waves were reported.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries as a result of the quake. » read more »
Bird Flu Death Toll Increases as Indonesian Woman Dies, Saturday
04 February 2008 -- Indonesia's health ministry says a 29-year-old woman has died of bird flu, raising the death toll in the southeast Asian nation to 102.
Officials say the woman died on Saturday in a Jakarta hospital. She is at least the eighth person to die this year from the disease.
The woman visited her parents recently and officials say their neighbors kept chicks. It was unclear, however, whether the chickens were infected with the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus.
Most bird flu cases in Indonesia involve contact with infected poultry. » read more »

Indonesian Ex-Dictator Suharto Dies at 86
27 January 2008 -- Former Indonesian President Suharto died in a Jakarta hospital Sunday after more than three weeks in critical condition.
Indonesia's current president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, told reporters at a somber news conference Sunday that Mr. Suharto had died.
He says on behalf of the country, the people, the government and himself as an individual, he extends condolences on the death of the former leader.
Mr. Suharto's daughter, Siti Hardiyanti, was emotional as she spoke to the news media. » read more »
Indonesian Bird Flu Death Toll Rises to 96
15 January 2008 -- Officials in Indonesia say another person has died from bird flu, bringing the country's death toll from the disease to 96 since the outbreak started in 2003.
The latest victim was a 16-year-old girl from the town of Bekasi, on the eastern outskirts of Jakarta. Officials say she died Tuesday.
Monday, officials reported that a 32-year-old woman from an area just west of Jakarta died of bird flu last week, at her home in the city of Tangerang. A statement from the health ministry said the woman's family kept chickens in their backyard. » read more »
Former Indonesia President Suharto in "Very Critical Condition"
13 January 2008 -- Doctors say former Indonesian President Suharto is in "very critical condition" after multiple organ failure.
The chief of the medical team treating the 86-year-old at a Jakarta hospital, Mardjo, Soebiandono, told reporters Sunday that almost all of the former dictator's organs were in decline.
He said doctors had gathered the family twice Sunday to tell them about the possibility that the situation could get worse. Family members said they would not insist on life support for the former president, leaving the decision to physicians. » read more »

Indonesian Earthquakes Kill Three, Injure 45
26 November 2007 -- Two strong earthquakes jolted Indonesia Sunday and early Monday, killing three people and injuring at least 45 others.
The first quake, a magnitude 6.1 temblor, struck late Sunday off the coast of Sumatra island at a depth of 20 kilometers.
Hours later, just after midnight, a second earthquake hit 45 kilometers west of Raba, a town on Sumbawa island, at a depth of 30 kilometers. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake off the Indonesian coast at preliminary magnitude of 6.4. » read more »
David Copperfield Sued by Promoters for $2.2 Million
12 November 2007, Washington (By Ray McDonald) -- Promoters are suing David Copperfield for nearly $2.2 million, after the illusionist pulled out of 48 shows in the face of rape claims. Filed November 6 in Los Angeles County Superior Court, the breach of contract suit names Copperfield, his company and one of his attorneys, Albert Rettig. Experts Cite Slow Progress Toward Tsunami Warning System in Indonesia
31 October 2007 -- Nearly three years after the massive Indian Ocean tsunami, Indonesia has only one working tsunami-warning buoy in place.
Plans call for more than 20 buoys to monitor seismic activity off the Indonesian coast by the end of 2008. Dr. Fauzi heads the tsunami division at Indonesia's Meteorological and Geophysical Agency, and he says only three have been installed, and two are now being repaired. » read more »
