US Says Arrests of Illegal Immigrants at Mexican Border Are Down

08 November 2007 -- Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says measures, such as hiring more agents and installing hi-tech detectors, have resulted in 22 percent decrease in arrests of illegal immigrants along the southern U.S border with Mexico. He says this is a sign U.S. authorities are beginning to get control of the border. Connecticut Attorney General Says Federal Law Bars Illegal Immigrants From Home Heating Assistance

September 25, 2007 -- Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal ruled in a formal legal opinion today that federal law bars states and Community Action Agencies (CAAs) from knowingly providing federal benefits such as home heating assistance to illegal immigrants, but also expressly exempts CAAs from verifying citizenship.

US Deports Immigrant Activist Who Took Refuge in Chicago Church

20 August 2007 -- U.S. immigration authorities have deported a Mexican illegal immigrant who took refuge in a church for a year to avoid being separated from her U.S.-born son.

The pastor of the church, Reverend Walter Coleman, says Elvira Arellano was deported to the Mexican border city of Tijuana late Sunday.

Police arrested the 32-year-old activist earlier Sunday in Los Angeles after she spoke at a rally in support of illegal immigrant rights.    » read more »
