August 22, 2007 -- INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter is alerting senior citizens to beware of a direct mail solicitation from the “CENSUS OF SENIOR CITIZENS” requesting that recipients fill out a survey and provide their credit card information for “donations”. Jul 13, 2007 -- LITTLE ROCK – Recently, Certegy Check Services, Inc., a national check verification and collection service company, experienced a data breach when an employee stole consumers' personal information, sold that information to a data broker that, in turn, sold the information to direct marketing organizations. According to a letter sent to affected consumers, checking, credit and debit account numbers, as well as customers' names, addresses, phone numbers, and possibly their dates of birth, were sold.    » read more »

Oklahoma Man Sentenced in Credit Card Scheme

06/26/2007 -- An Oklahoma City man suspected to be part of an identity theft crime ring pleaded guilty yesterday in Oklahoma County District Court, Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson said.

Scott Richard Poor was sentenced to five years imprisonment after pleading guilty to one count of obtaining property by trick or deception. Poor was charged in February with using stolen credit card information to purchase a $750 engine from Advance Auto Parts. Poor yesterday paid full restitution.    » read more »

Ohio Governor Reports Additional Data Found on Stolen State Data Device

6.20.07 - COLUMBUS, OH – Ohio Governor Ted Strickland today announced the state has determined that additional information is contained on the computer back-up device stolen last week, and will extend Debix services to taxpayers and other Ohioans with sensitive data which has been found on the device.

It remains unlikely that someone can access the data contained in the device without specialized knowledge and equipment. The State of Ohio has no information to date that the data has been accessed, but continues to encourage everyone to take preventative precautions.    » read more »
