Kentucky Governor Fletcher Appoints Member to the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority
September 21, 2007 -- FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher has appointed Richard Knock, of Union, to the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority.
Knock, who previously owned thoroughbred race horses with Steve Cauthen, is chairman and CEO of several business interests in Kentucky and a member of the Kenton County Airport Board and the Boone County Planning and Zoning Commission. He is a former chair of the University of the Cumberlands Board of Directors and is married to JoAnn Knock. » read more »
New York Governor Spitzer Recommends Restructured NYRA Be Awarded Thoroughbred Racing Franchise
Separate VLT Operator to be Selected in Sixty Days
September 4, 2007 -- New York Governor Eliot Spitzer announced today his recommendation that the New York Racing Association (NYRA) be awarded the state’s racing franchise to operate Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course. He also announced his recommendation that a separate franchise be awarded to an experienced gaming operator to operate as many as 4,500 video lottery terminals (VLT) at Aqueduct. Kansas AG Morrison Charges Former Woodlands General Manager, Seeks Public Assistance
August 22, 2007 -- Kansas Attorney General Paul Morrison today announced criminal charges against James Gartland, former general manager of the Woodlands racetrack in Wyandotte County, and is seeking assistance from the public in locating him.
Gartland was charged with three counts of Making False Information, a Level 8, Non-Person Felony, and four counts of Computer Crimes, a Level 8, Non-Person Felony. » read more »
New Jersey Racing Commission Proposes Amendment Regarding Administration of Lasix
August 20, 2007 -- Proposal Description:
The proposal is to amend N.J.A.C. 13:71-23.8 to permit licensed practicing veterinarians to administer furosemide (Lasix) to respiratory bleeders at locations (licensed off-track stabling facilities) other than on the grounds of the Racing Association with approval of the New Jersey Racing Commission. In order to receive Racing Commission approval, off-track stabling facilities may be required to enhance security and shore up the physical integrity of areas in which Lasix administrations are expected to occur. » read more »
Six Charged in Illegal Horse Track Case in Oklahoma
07/31/2007 -- Six people arrested during a weekend raid at an illegal race track were charged today in Love County District Court with 12 felonies, including illegal gambling and racketeering.
Jesus Romero, aka Jessie Romero, Geraldo Ruiz, aka Gerardo Ruiz, Martin Treja, aka Martin Trejo, Brandon Hicks, Darl Robert Waterhouse and Michael Phillips are each accused of four counts of commercial gambling, one count of racketeering, one count of conspiracy and seven counts of charging an admission fee to an unlicensed horse racing track. » read more »

Horse Racing: "Curlin" Edges Derby Winner at Preakness
20 May 2007 -- There will be no Triple Crown winner again this year in U.S. horse racing after "Curlin" edged Kentucky Derby winner "Street Sense" at the finish line to win the 132nd Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, Maryland.
Street Sense and jockey Calvin Borel were leading coming into the final few meters, but Curlin with Robby Albarado aboard caught Street Sense and won by a nose. Just three races earlier, Albarado had leapt from his mount as he tried to avoid a fallen horse.
Kentucky Derby runner up "Hard Spun" finished third, fourth lengths behind the winner. » read more »
'Street Sense' Wins Kentucky Derby
06 May 2007 -- "Street Sense" has made an amazing charge from 19th place to win the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, the first jewel in horse racing's Triple Crown.
After falling behind early Saturday, jockey Calvin Borel guided "Street Sense" back from next-to-last in the 20-horse field to win the race in two minutes and two seconds. "Hard Spun" was second, two lengths back, while early favorite "Curlin" finished third.
"Street Sense" is the first two-year-old to win the race of mainly three-year-olds since Spectacular Bid accomplished the feat in 1979. » read more »
Kentucky Derby: Pre-race tests of Kentucky Derby horses all negative
FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 4, 2007) – Blood samples from the 20 horses entered in the Kentucky Derby tested negative for "blood-doping" agents, according to the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority (KHRA).

Connecticut Attorney General Fights Illegal Internet Gambling On New York Horse Races
May 2, 2007 -- Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and Division of Special Revenue (DRS) Executive Director Paul A. Young today sent letters to the New York Racing Association (NYRA) and New York gambling regulators demanding they scuttle an illegal plan to accept Internet horse race wagers from Connecticut residents starting today.
Such wagering violates Connecticut law, which prohibits all Internet gambling, Blumenthal and Young wrote the NYRA and the New York State Racing and Wagering Board, which regulates gambling in New York state. » read more »
