Experts Say New Drugs, Rapid Diagnosis Needed for Drug Resistant TB

12 November 2007 -- Experts on lung disease meeting in South Africa are warning the world could face a tuberculosis crisis if drug resistant strains of TB are not contained and if TB testing does not become a regular part of HIV treatment.

Three thousand experts from 100 countries ended a five-day conference in Cape Town warning that urgent measures are needed to address the spread of drug-resistant tuberculosis and its growing presence among victims of HIV/AIDS.    » read more »

Scientists: AIDS Virus Came to US Via Haiti

30 October 2007 -- The strain of the HIV virus which predominates in the United States and Europe has been traced back to Haiti by a team of scientists. The team hopes that knowing the virus's origin could help find a cure for HIV, which can lead to AIDS.

A team of scientists, whose work was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has found that a specific strain of the HIV virus passed from Haiti to the United States in about 1969 before spreading further.    » read more »

Minnesota Funds HIV Prevention Programs For Foreign-Born Residents

October 24, 2007 -- Three agencies have been chosen to receive state HIV prevention funding for programs designed to reach foreign-born residents in Minnesota who are most at risk for HIV. The grants were made by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) in response to legislation passed in 2007.

In announcing the grants Wednesday, MDH’s STD and HIV Section Manager Peter Carr said the programs were “necessary to promote knowledge and understanding about HIV in a culturally specific way, including addressing HIV stigma, in order to reduce the risk for HIV infection.”    » read more »

Male Circumcision Findings in African Countries Substantiate New AIDS Prevention Tool

08 October 2007 -- Doctors in Rwanda are encouraged by test results in three African countries that show a high correlation between male heterosexual circumcision and a reduction in the transmission rate of HIV/AIDS.
