The Caribbean nation of Haiti is looking to a small shrub called jatropha to cut its reliance on oil and charcoal, and to expand economic opportunities to poor communities. Scientists: AIDS Virus Came to US Via Haiti
30 October 2007 -- The strain of the HIV virus which predominates in the United States and Europe has been traced back to Haiti by a team of scientists. The team hopes that knowing the virus's origin could help find a cure for HIV, which can lead to AIDS.
A team of scientists, whose work was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has found that a specific strain of the HIV virus passed from Haiti to the United States in about 1969 before spreading further. » read more »

Haiti: Haitian Migrant Boat Capsizes, Killing 20
04 May 2007 -- U.S. Coast Guard officials say a boat carrying more than 100 Haitian migrants has capsized near the Turks and Caicos islands, killing at least 20 people. In Miami, VOA's Brian Wagner reports that Coast Guard officials are assisting in search and rescue operations.
Coast Guard officials say police in the Turks and Caicos intercepted the overloaded boat before dawn and were bringing it into port when the vessel capsized. Authorities for the British territory in the Caribbean called U.S. Coast Guard officials to help in the search and rescue operation. » read more »
