Strong Earthquake Hits Southern Greece
07 January 2008 -- A strong earthquake has shaken southern Greece, but there have been no reports of casualties or serious damage.
The quake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale woke up residents of the Peloponnese region early Sunday, sending many in the streets.
Greek authorities say the quake occurred at the depth of more than 70 kilometers. It was centered about 80 miles southwest of Athens. Tremors were felt in the Greek capital.
Seismologists say two aftershocks were felt later in the morning.
Earthquakes are common in Greece.

NASA Keeps Eye on Ozone Layer Amid Montreal Protocol's Success

The United Nations Environment Program will host the meeting from Sept. 23-26 in Athens, Greece. Greece: Progress Made in Fighting Fires in Greece
29 August 2007 -- Fire officials in Greece say progress is being made in fighting deadly wildfires sweeping the country but many fires are not yet contained.
With firefighting efforts concentrated Wednesday on the island of Evia, north of Athens, and on the Peloponnese Peninsula, Greek officials say there is no longer imminent danger of the fires spreading.
The fires have claimed at least 63 lives and burned numerous villages and thousands of hectares of forest. » read more »
Fires Rage in Greece For Fifth Day
28 August 2007 -- Forest fires continue to rage in Greece's mountainous southern peninsula of Peloponnese. At least 63 people have died in the blazes, which are now in their fifth day. Police have charged seven people with arson and are offering a $1.4 million reward for information leading to more arrests. Greek voters go to polls in September and the fires may play a big role.
Political commentators in Athens say whether the fires will have an effect on next month's general election depends on how the public judges the government's handling of the crisis. » read more »
Greece Prepares for Construction of Russian-backed Oil Pipeline From Bulgaria
15 August 2007 -- Greece, Bulgaria and Russia earlier this year agreed to spend over $1 billion to build a 230-kilometer oil pipeline from Bulgaria's Black Sea port of Burgas to Alexandroupolis on Greece's Mediterranean coast. Heat Wave, Wildfires, Continue Ravaging Greece, Romania
28 June 2007 -- Authorities in Greece say the longest heat wave ever recorded in the country has killed at least 10 people in the past week, including two firefighters trapped early Thursday north of Athens.
Two other men escaped the inferno that continued to lay waste to heavily-forested areas in the center of the country. Authorities told Reuters that firefighters already hampered by strong northerly winds also are encountering exploding World War II ordnance in forests north of the capital. » read more »
