American Gymnasts Win Two Individual Apparatus Gold Medals
10 September 2007 -- Americans won the final two women's individual apparatus gold medals at the World Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.
Shawn Johnson, the all-around champion, won the floor exercise ahead of countrywoman Alicia Sacramone, and Nastia Liukin won the balance beam title. That gave the U.S. women four of the six gold medals at worlds.
Johnson's margin of victory over Sacramone was only one 40th of a point (.025). Liukin took the balance beam by one eighth of a point (.125) over Romania's Steliana Nistor. China's Li Shanshan won the bronze. » read more »

China is again hosting the premier event in women's football after holding the inaugural Women's World Cup in 1991. An outbreak of SARS prevented China from hosting the last World Cup in 2003. The event was held instead in the United States. The tournament now returns to the birthplace of the game, and it is also helping to boost preparations for the Beijing Olympics in less than one year. » read more »
Michael Schumacher Wins of Prince of Asturias Award for Sports 2007
05 September 2007 (By VOA Sports) -- Seven-time Formula One driving champion Michael Schumacher of Germany has been named this year's winner of the Prince of Asturias award for sports.
The retired 38-year-old German, who finished his career with Ferrari in 2006, was chosen out of 18 candidates from 10 countries. Among those considered were Russian pole vault world champion Yelena Isinbayeva and tennis aces Rafael Nadal of Spain and Roger Federer of Switzerland.

Bernard Lagat has won his first world championship and his first major title since becoming an American citizen. From the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan, VOA's David Byrd reports on the 1500 meters race and the rest of the day's action.
Bernard Lagat wanted to win his first gold medal before Wednesday. He had come close, winning world and Olympic silver medals while running for his native Kenya.
When he became an American citizen, he could not compete in the 2005 World Championships because of citizenship regulations. » read more »

The Osnabrueck Symphony Orchestra will play works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Elgar in Tehran Wednesday and Thursday.
The German orchestra is performing in Iran as part of an exchange that saw the Tehran Symphony Orchestra perform last year in Osnabrueck.
